Hi Tom, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Tom Gera and I run DC Wine & Spirits, a family-owned wine, champagne and spirits gifting company based in the Washington, DC area. We’ve been going since 2014. Today we deliver to every state where alcohol delivery is allowed, and we also have a non-alcoholic range for everyone else.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, not smooth. I’d be lying if I said it was.
The hardest part was letting go of the delivery. When we were local I drove the baskets around myself. If something looked wrong I fixed it in the car before I got to the door. The first time you hand a champagne basket to a carrier and just hope, it’s a horrible feeling.
Breakage taught us the rest the expensive way. We rebuilt our packaging more times than I want to admit, and every version got better because something had gone wrong in the last one.
Then there’s the signature. Alcohol can’t be left on a doorstep, somebody over 21 has to sign for it. If nobody’s home the package goes back, and by then the birthday has already passed. The gift was fine, the wine was fine, and it still failed.
The year is lopsided too. A huge share of it lands in the few weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year, and one broken bottle in that stretch can ruin somebody’s gift to their biggest client.
If I had to name the real mistake, it’s that I thought growth was a marketing problem for far too long. It wasn’t. We could always find more orders. What we couldn’t always do was fulfil them properly. Fixing the operation was less interesting than fixing the advertising, and it mattered a lot more.
