Conversations with Afternoon Tiger

Today we’d like to introduce you to Afternoon Tiger.

Afternoon Tiger

Hi, Afternoon Tiger. We’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Caleb Fowler. My journey as a musician started when I was just 10 years old. My grandmother is a pianist and singer, so she encouraged my interest in music early on. My dad had an old classical guitar collecting dust since he never played. It was a warped relic, but at that age, I didn’t know any better; it was a guitar! I thought it was the coolest thing ever. So, my family decided to get lessons for me from a local guitar teacher for a little while. It was long enough to get the basics, and I hit the ground running. Music became my everything. The guitar was just the beginning. I picked up as many different instruments as I could. Piano, Bass Guitar, Drums, Cello, Trumpet, Harmonica, Ukulele, Synthesizers, and I could keep going! I played in several bands as a guitarist, singer, bassist, and drummer in high school and college. I was then accepted into Berklee College of Music. I was beyond excited! This was a dream come true. I was learning from some of the country’s best musicians and music teachers. I could feel the music in my bones! Unfortunately, my life then hit an all-time low. But this is not a sad story! So, to keep it brief, my depression and anxiety got the best of me, and I ended up dropping out of college and, well, just dropping out of life. I was lost.

At some point, I made my way into discovering electronic music genres and dance music festivals. This was the release I had been searching for! I fell into the EDM or ‘Electronic Dance Music’ community as hard as possible. I even decided to try my hand at producing EDM. Taking my musical abilities to a computer and combining my knowledge of various instruments with classical training was like a match made in heaven. This was when I decided to start releasing music named ‘Afternoon Tiger.’ It was the perfect fit as a night owl and fan of music, dance, and art. I wanted to create a brand that represented artistic and musical freedom. After years of cultivating this craft, in 2022, I signed my first record deal with Outertone Records, releasing 5 singles in my first year, which have received over 100,000 streams in over 30 different countries! I even worked with famous dubstep artist Nightcore, who remixed one of my original songs!

Now, I DJ every weekend in downtown Austin at several locations. I have also performed in San Antonio, Houston, and Galveston! I play mostly house or drum & bass, and I love mixing in some pop remixes and my originals! I am going to bigger stages, with a possible opportunity to play at the 2024 SXSW Music Festival! And I’m just getting started. I want to travel the world, spreading peace, love, unity, and respect, not to mention some fantastic music!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The music industry is anything but a smooth road. Especially in this day of internet communication, everyone and their mother wants to be a musician and have a platform to share their music on, so being able to stand out takes work. Getting the attention of promoters, labels, and managers takes work when there are already many talented artists. And more are being discovered every day!

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I produce electronic music by recording instruments, sampling just about any random sound, and altering it to perfection. I also don’t stay within the boundaries of one genre; I am blending at least two or more different styles of music. I don’t like rules and never have, so I often break them if I can to create music nobody has heard before. So far, my biggest ‘hits’ have been my dubstep/futurebass singles ‘Without You’ and ‘Dreamweavers.’

What are your plans for the future?
I am actively seeking opportunities to play at more venues and festivals! I have a new drum and bass single, “Soar Like a Pigeon,” to release next month. And hopefully, you will see me on stage at the 2024 SXSW Music Festival!
