Today we’d like to introduce you to Agapeh Allahverdi
Hi Agapeh , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am an LA-based lighting designer with a background in astronomy. My journey into architectural lighting was somewhat serendipitous, as I discovered the field while working in interiors. I’ve always been fascinated by light and the way it carries information, and I found architectural lighting to be the perfect intersection of my passion for both light and architecture. This blend of interests allows me to create designs that not only illuminate spaces but also tell a story through the medium of light.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Lighting design has been challenging in that light, as a medium, is both abstract and ethereal. Mastering its control and effectively communicating its nuances to clients have been key challenges along the way. Despite these challenges, the field has been incredibly rewarding and enjoyable to work in.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As an architectural lighting designer, my work focuses on creating lighting solutions that enhance and transform spaces. I specialize in balancing technical precision with artistic expression, ensuring that each project not only meets functional needs but also evokes a distinct atmosphere. My background in astronomy deeply influences my approach, as I view light as a medium that communicates information and shapes our perception of the built environment. I am most proud of projects where lighting becomes more than just illumination, acting as a core element that brings architecture to life. What sets me apart is my ability to fuse science and creativity, translating complex concepts into designs that are both visually compelling and aligned with the client’s vision.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is the importance of respecting myself as a designer and trusting my intuition and creative flow. I’ve come to value my own process and recognize the significance of setting boundaries around the hours I work. As a creative, it’s essential for me to step away from my practice at times, allowing myself the space to rejuvenate, refuel, and find new sources of inspiration. This balance has been key to maintaining both my creativity and well-being.
