Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Maldonado.
Hi Carlos, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Our mariachi group, Mariachi Suroeste, was born out of the Texas State University Mariachi Program pre name-change in 1998. Southwest translates to Suroeste.
The complete story starts a few years before then when myself and a few other students started gathering every Friday to play mariachi music we had learned in our respective high school mariachi programs.
Before we knew it, we had a group of 15-20 students gathering to create mariachi music together on Friday evenings.
A gathering turned to a club, then an organization, and then finally a class anyone could sign up for for college credit.
That was the birth of the nationally recognized Texas State University Mariachi Program.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
From the beginning in 1998, it was the goal of our founder Frank Deleon to build our group with local talent.
Being born out of the university mariachi and being based in San Marcos, TX gave us continued support from new mariachi students attending the university.
While some local groups have struggled to stay together, we have managed to be able to continue providing our music services now for 28 years as we have members that have called the area their home for as many years.
We’ve also managed to continue using a few college students over the years both from the Texas State University and University of Texas at Austin Mariachi Proframs.

We specialize in mariachi music entertainment and we have been established since 1998.
