Conversations with Courtney Polson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Polson.

Hi Courtney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I knew I was never going to fit the mold society wanted me to. In high school, I transferred to a self-paced program by senior year, where I not only graduated early, but split my time giving full-time care to a family with a child fighting brain cancer, as well as an evening restaurant gig. It’s not that school was hard for me, but rather, the opposite. I found school under-stimulating and desperately needed other ways to keep myself busy. Through this discovery process, I learned how important accountability is, testing my strengths and weaknesses, and maintaining happiness to share with others. Fast forward to 2022, where I now own and operate my own naturally derived hair salon in Wimberley, Texas.

When I decided to go to school for hair, I chose the Aveda Institute of Cosmetology. I wanted to give back to others in a natural and health-conscious way while still fueling myself with much-needed pizazz and spontaneity. I fell in love with helping others fall in love with themselves through their self-care practices. Of course, I could have lived out my career being a commissioned stylist, or even a contract worker renting my own booth, but neither of those options left me fully satisfied. At the end of the day, I needed my own creative space where I could fully practice what I preach and not allow anyone or anything to hold me back.

Within 8 months of opening Bee’s Knees Salon, I was overflowing with business! So much so that I had to cut off any new clientele requests for booking. Since then, I have hired an additional stylist and have plans brewing for the future. I am constantly asked how I came up with my business name and here is my answer. I wanted something involving nature considering all products we use (including color) are free of any harsh chemicals, are toxin-free, naturally derived, responsibility sourced and whenever possible, 100% organic, and because of my partnership with local Bee Keeper/Harvester/Naturalist, Buzz In The Hills. It’s been a dream come true to pass on knowledge of healthy living when it comes to your hair and skin, and to see people’s lives radiate because of it!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not always. Some family members treated me as less than. I’ll never forget a message I received from an older cousin of mine. In it, he wrote, “you seem to be content with wasting your life as a waitress.” I never felt the need to explain myself to him then. I hope my success suffices as a response today. That being said, most of my family and friends were nothing but supportive- emotionally and physically! Of course, starting my business and dealing with the day-to-day struggles wouldn’t be possible without the never-ending love and encouragement my husband provides for me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I LOVE cutting all your hair off! Short hair is my jam. Anything with tons of texture, edgy, organized ciaos. This goes for guys and girls. Coloring of course, is a blast, but it’s nothing without the foundation of a stellar haircut. After all, you can’t paint your house until you build it, right? I think my passion for cutting hair sets me apart from a lot of hair stylists I have met in my lifetime. To me, it’s never a one size fits all. Every cut, every strand, and every person requires a new approach or mix of techniques. I thrive off of the constant change and evolution in this industry.

How do you think about happiness?
Feeling a genuine sense of happiness from another person and knowing you helped plant that seed to sprout.
