Today we’d like to introduce you to Hector Alvarez.
Hi Hector, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
What started as a temporary fill-in for a friend became a full career shift. I’ve always had an eye for telling stories through photos. My first experience with a professional camera was at a powerlifting meet in San Antonio, when my jobs creative director asked me to help out on the day he competed. His only direction was to have fun and do my best with the camera. He ended up believing I could go far with it. Since then, I’ve shot everything from a proposal to a mini-documentary at an Ironman. I’ve also had the chance to help some local businesses around the city with content and social media rollouts. All it took was someone encouraging me to try something new.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not, some months are harder than others- ive learned this industry definitely has its peaks and valleys. For me its always been an ongoing battle with imposter syndrome, second guessing everything that I work on or even scratching a project because i dont think its perfect.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
During business hours, I help manage a gym on the east side of Austin, Lift ATX. Outside of that, I am pursuing a career as a photographer/videographer. I love helping others tell their story, capturing special moments, and to be seen. My proudest achievement is when I meet someone that’s new to the photography industry and hearing that I inspire them to be better and do well in their work. It’s so heartwarming! I know what it’s like to be lost behind the lens, so I make sure to be present and help where I can.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Quantity > Quality. To get better, you just need to keep going, get in as many reps as possible, and learn from them.
