Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Ishak.
Hi Jessica , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started doing hair in California. I worked under a Wella educator at Alan Edwards. After my training I went to work in a small salon on my own in Tarzana. Then I decided to work at John Of Italy in Westlake Village. I received more training, European and American.. After several years working at the salon I got to work under amazing educators. I feel so blessed for all the amazing people I crossed paths with in my time there. Then i meet my husband and we wanted to start a family and we had to make a difficult decision to leave California and move to Austin Texas. We moved in 2020 I was a travel Hair Stylist in California for one year. Then I decided to get a Salon suite and Leander Texas. I have been working in Leander sense 2021. We love Texas it was an amazing move for our family. It is nice to be in a family style salon. I have been doing hair since I was 16 years old I got my cosmetology license at 19. I have done hair for events celebrities and special occasions. Including traveling as a stylist I have had a lot of amazing experiences in my craft.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I was 17 I got in a car accident my finger was broken and my recovery was intense. It was very difficult to get my body back to where it was. I love doing hair so I didn’t let it stop me. Ii was a very long recovery. My next challenge was I had an internship set up and It was a friend of a family member and I let them know I would miss my window of opportunity to go to Cosmotology school If for some reason, he changed his mind and he changed his mind one day after my deadline. It was devastating so I had to wait to enroll which wasted a lot of time getting to my passion. But again, I didn’t let it stop me. I waited for the next enrollment period to enroll for cosmetology school.. when you are really passionate about something and it’s your dream. You just can’t let these obstacles get in the way you have to try anyway..
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a corrective color specialist. I enjoy giving people the ability to express themselves. I take into consideration their lifestyle how often they would like to come in and I also help when people have problems with their hair like adding fullness and length so I also got into Extentions. I enjoy doing custom haircuts geared towards people’s hair, texture and face shape and lifestyle. I also studied psychology for fun. This also helps me in My craft. A lot of people aren’t just looking for Hair Stylist. They’re looking for someone to spend time with and talk to about life’s problems and challenges..
How do you define success?
I found something I love and I’m passionate about and made it into a business. It makes me happy. I also enjoy helping people and it feels good to help people express themselves or help them with personal problems they are having. It makes me feel successful because I have an amazing clientele in Leander. I get very good feedback from my clients which makes me feel successful because I am able to make them happy and listen to what they need. And it helps me support my family and when I come home, I don’t feel tired and drained because I love what I do.. being successful is about being true to who you are and in my craft it’s not just about making money. It’s about connecting with people and understanding what they need..
