Conversations with Kelley Laws

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelley Laws.

Hi Kelley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My love for photography began at a young age when I got my first film camera in fourth grade. I quickly fell in love with capturing emotion and memories in pictures, and by middle school I was helping with yearbook before moving into sports photography in high school. During my senior year, I photographed my first wedding, and I was completely hooked.

What has always drawn me to photography is the ability to preserve the passing moments that become the memories families cherish for generations. I have always had a nostalgic heart and love looking back through old photographs – the ones that tell stories, bring back emotions, and remind us of the people and seasons of life we never want to forget. It is such an honor to now create those meaningful images for others.

After more than 10 years of photographing weddings, I have had the privilege of capturing countless love stories and unforgettable moments. Today, as a mother of three and while balancing other personal commitments, I intentionally photograph a select number of weddings each year throughout the Austin area and for destination celebrations.

I truly love what I do and feel incredibly grateful for every couple who trusts me with such an important chapter of their story. Above all, I am grateful God’s grace and faithfulness in my life. It has been a gift to turn something I loved as a kid into a career that allows me to preserve memories for others in a way that feels so meaningful.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth road, but each season has shaped me and my business in meaningful ways. One of the biggest transitions was moving out of the States for a few years and then rebuilding my photography business once we returned. Starting over in a new season of life was challenging, but it also reminded me how much I truly love this work and the relationships that come with it.

More recently, I have been balancing running my business, working full time, raising my three children, and pursuing a second degree – all while continuing to pour my heart into the couples and families I have the privilege of serving. It has been a full season, but one filled with so much growth, gratitude, and purpose.

Through every transition, I have seen God’s faithfulness pave the way, and I am incredibly thankful for how He has guided each step. Looking back, I wouldn’t trade the challenges because they have deepened my appreciation for this journey. I am so grateful for every couple, family, and vendor I have had the opportunity to meet, photograph, and work alongside.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have had the honor of specializing in wedding photography, capturing love stories throughout the Austin area and beyond through destination celebrations. While weddings have always been at the heart of my work, this season has also brought exciting opportunities to explore lifestyle sessions and new creative projects that have been really amazing.

What matters most to me is not just creating beautiful images, but being a calming and encouraging presence for my couples on one of the most meaningful days of their lives. Wedding days are filled with so much emotion, anticipation, and joy, and I strive to be someone my couples can truly trust – a steady presence who helps them feel comfortable, cared for, and fully present in the moment.

I believe every couple has a story that is completely their own, and my goal is to preserve that story authentically through timeless imagery. The details, the emotions, the quiet moments, and the connections between people are what make each wedding unique. I am most proud of the relationships I have built with my couples and vendors over the years and the trust they have placed in me to capture memories they will treasure for generations.

What sets my work apart is the heart behind it. Photography has always been about more than taking pictures for me – it is about preserving the moments people never want to forget and creating an experience where couples feel genuinely seen, valued, and celebrated.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
There are so many creatives and resources that have inspired me throughout my journey. Anything created by Jose Villa is something I always admire. His fine art wedding photography book, has been a favorite of mine since 2011 and has continued to inspire the way I view light, emotion, and storytelling.

I am also incredibly grateful for the photography community I have found through The Archetype Process. The encouragement, knowledge, and artistry shared within that community have been such a gift, and I could not recommend their profiles and resources more highly to other photographers looking to grow. I am also super grateful for my film lab, Rewind Film Lab who are always such a great support and incredible at what they do.

Beyond specific resources, I think one of the greatest influences in my work has been continuing to stay curious – learning from other artists and always looking for ways to grow while staying true to the heart behind why I started photography in the first place.
