Today we’d like to introduce you to Leevi Aroviita
Hi Leevi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
It all started with a passion for fingerboarding and making videos. Ever since I remember I’ve always been filming these different quirky passions I have. I used to do fingerboarding, which is like skateboarding but with your fingers, a lot when I was little. Recently as an adult I rediscovered this passion through finding these outdoor spots which replicate a skate spot but for your fingerboard. I thought it would be so cool to share and see these different spots from around the world, but there was no place to do that. I created this map where you can upload spots from anywhere in the world and now with the support from this amazing community we have over 750 spots on every continent. It’s been exhilarating seeing the map grow and get traction. It always makes me so happy to hear that people are actually using the map to find spots in their local area. Our goal is to have every fingerboarder in the world use the map to add and find spots in their city. The options are endless, since once you start looking, there are fingerboarding spots everywhere you go!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The response from the community has been so great, on a daily basis I’m surprised and delighted by the positive feedback and reinforcement. It truly makes my day when people enjoy using the map and get value from it! Some of the challenges have included getting the word out about the map, but I think the concept is great and once people hear about it they start enjoying and using it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In the fingerboarding community I’m known for the Fingerboard Spots map and the Instagram page for it. We share different spots around the world and repost people’s videos from them. I love the community and the feeling of creating together! Apart from fingerboarding and running the site I’m finishing my studies and working on different projects that I come up with and get excited about. I’ve always loved this sort of project work, where you try different things bravely and some of them may never lead to anything, but some start growing surprisingly well. I’m most proud of how much traction the map has gotten and how many people are using it every day. We have big plans on growing it into more of a business in order to keep providing the best possible service for the community!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I’d say just forget your own doubts and start contacting people without any prejudices. If you mean well, the right people will catch up on it and start vibing with you. I’ve met so many awesome people and gotten so much help by just reaching out and wanting to create something together. You can’t really plan out everything beforehand, you just have to start doing and talking to people about it. Always try to create value for others and don’t only think about what you can get out of it. By doing this anything is possible!
