Today we’d like to introduce you to Leon O’Neal.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story as a DJ began on the campus of Huston Tillotson University here in Austin. What started as a love for music became an opportunity to bring people together and help create the soundtrack for campus life. That foundation taught me how powerful music can be when it reflects the people and culture around it.
From there, I had the opportunity to help shape the sound and culture of Austin Nightlife and radio through 102.3 The Beat and KAZI 88.7. Those experiences helped me build a real connection with the city while learning how to entertain, inform, and represent the community through music.
Over the years, that journey has taken me to stages I never imagined when I first started. I have played the X Games, NBA All Star Weekend, served as a DJ on BET’s 106 & Park, and became the official DJ of the Austin Spurs. I have also performed at major festivals and events including DreamCon, Comic Con, SXSW, the R&B Block Party, and Good Vibes Only Festival. I have opened for artists such as Kendrick Lamar, H.E.R., J. Cole, Nicki Minaj, and Leela James, who I have also had the opportunity to tour with as her DJ.
As my career grew, I began thinking beyond individual DJ bookings. Through The Yella Collective, I started producing and curating events that reflect the music, culture, and people I care about. I want to create spaces where people feel welcomed, represented, and free to enjoy themselves.
Giving back to Austin is a major part of what keeps me going. I try to support local businesses, create opportunities for other DJs and creatives, share what I have learned, and build platforms where new talent can be seen. Austin gave me the space to grow from a college DJ into a businessman and touring professional, so I feel a responsibility to pour something meaningful back into the city.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. After graduating from Huston Tillotson, I was determined to “not get a real job.” That determination pushed me to turn DJing from something I loved into a lifestyle and a real business.
Along the way, I learned a lot of tough lessons about business, money, relationships, and people. Talent can get you an opportunity, but it takes discipline, consistency, patience, and good decision making to build something that lasts. I have made mistakes, trusted the wrong people, accepted opportunities that were not right for me, and taken losses while trying to figure things out.
Even today, I still have setbacks and losses that I have to learn from. I do not look at success as reaching a point where nothing goes wrong. For me, it is about having the resilience to keep going, being honest about what I could have done better, and applying those lessons moving forward.
The road has humbled me, but it has also made me a better DJ, businessman, father, and person. I am grateful that I stayed committed, even during the seasons when this path did not look practical to anyone but me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At the center of my work is entertaining people through music. I specialize in reading a room, understanding what people need in that moment, and creating DJ performances that make them sing, dance, and feel connected. My foundation is Hip Hop and R&B, but my experience allows me to move through different genres, generations, and audiences without losing the identity of the event.
Beyond performing, I curate inclusive entertainment spaces throughout Austin. Through The Yella Collective, I develop events that bring people together and make them feel welcomed, represented, and comfortable enough to fully participate. I am intentional about the music, venue, audience, hospitality, and overall environment because every detail affects how people feel when they walk into a space.
I believe what sets me apart is that I understand both sides of the work. I can perform as the DJ, but I can also build the event, develop the concept, promote it, manage the business, and create opportunities for other DJs, hosts, venues, and local creatives. I do not only think about how the night looks from the DJ booth. I think about the entire room and everyone in it.
I am most proud that I have been able to build a lasting career while still serving the city that gave me my start. The performances and major opportunities mean a lot to me, but so does earning the trust of people who continue to attend my events, book me, and support what I create. After more than 20 years, I am still finding new ways to bring people together through music, and I do not take that for granted.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Authenticity and consistency have been the most important qualities in my success. I have always tried to be honest about who I am, what I represent, and the type of spaces I want to create. People can tell when something is genuine, and I believe that authenticity has helped me build real relationships throughout Austin.
Consistency is what has allowed those relationships to last. Talent may get someone’s attention, but consistently showing up prepared, treating people fairly, and delivering quality work builds trust. After more than 20 years, people know what they can expect from me, and I never take that trust for granted.
