Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Field.
Lindsay, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always been fascinated with glass and when I was a kid I was interested in glassblowing. For as long as I can remember I was always doing art and even from an early age I wanted to be an artist when I grew up. Eventually all of the pieces aligned and I found glass bead making on a torch and was hooked! It is a smaller scale version of glassblowing and it was addicting right from the start. However, after making beads for awhile I found that I would have to make 6 or 7 beads of the same design in order to make a matching pair of earrings. While working at a local glass studio here in Austin, they had me take a fused glass class so that I could help customers better. Not only did it help with customer service at the shop, it also solved my issue of making matching earrings since I could grind the glass to match perfectly. I have been fusing glass ever since and love exploring color palettes and new designs that I can make out of glass. I make jewelry including: earrings, pendants, bracelets, rings and hair accessories. I also create unique designs in plates and wall panels. Additionally, I also blow glass ornaments; which satisfies the desire I had as a kid to get to blow glass.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I am definitely more “right brained” than left, so being creative is where I feel most comfortable. It’s the business side of things where I typically struggle. Especially in the beginning it was a lot to figure out how to run a business. Since I work for myself and don’t have any employees, I wear many hats and still feel like I’m trying to figure it all out sometimes. I also make my own hours and it is definitely a balancing act between having enough time to work and spending enough time with my partner and friends. I also enjoy adventurous activities, like rock climbing, so balancing work with time at the climbing gym is also a challenge. I feel very fortunate that these are the types of problems I have in my life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a fused glass artist and specialize in modern/retro jewelry, accessories and home decor inspired by mid-century modern designs. My work is made by cutting and layering sheets of colorful glass and melting them together in a kiln at 1500 degrees. The glass is layered so that when fused it will melt into a particular design. I then coldwork the glass with various equipment including: tile saw, drill press, lapidary grinder and sandblaster to refine and reshape the piece. It then gets polished in the kiln to a nice shine, or sandblasted and then fired in the kiln to create a matte finish.
One of the things I’m known for is offering a large selection of different stud earring designs. I’m also known for creating unique designs out of glass and finishing my pieces with angular edges and sometimes a matte surface that show off my level of craftsmanship.
Additionally, I also blow glass ornaments and I’m super proud to say that they are featured in a Hallmark movie! A few years ago a director at the Hallmark channel reached out to me and had me paint the 12 Days of Christmas on my ornaments for a movie they were about to film at the time. It was (and still is!) a very surreal experience to see my work in a movie!
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I am very fortunate and happy to get to do what I love every day when I go to “work.” I can’t imagine doing anything else and it truly fills my heart that I get to be creative in my job and that people appreciate what I make and want to buy something that I created. It’s kind of a wild feeling to make things that people want to have in their lives that help express who they are to the world.
