Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Bone.
Lindsey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi! My name is Lindsey Bone. I am 22 years old and live in Round Rock, TX. I have always been a creative, artistic person, ever since I can remember. Currently, I decorate cakes as well as teach kickboxing! In my free time, I enjoy playing music, as well as spending time with my pets, friends, and family. In the future, I plan on continuing down the path to helping others reach their fitness goals as well as continue to decorate treats. What a combo! LOL!
Starting at a very young age, I loved to help decorate cakes that were being made for the family. Around the age of 12, I was introduced to the show “Cake Boss” on TLC at my cousins’ house. After watching one episode, I was instantly shocked by the art of cake decorating. It was like my love of art and baking had been combined! The things that Buddy could do with cakes amazed me, and I could see myself doing the same techniques someday. I was immediately inspired by him and knew I wanted to become a cake decorator one day.
After watching literally hundreds of episodes (sometimes multiple times), I wanted to try! I began decorating cakes for every occasion I could have an excuse to make a cake for. Birthdays, Easter, Fourth of July, you name it! I loved making cakes and learning new techniques from watching Cake Boss. Everything came so naturally to me, and I was having so much fun!
I kept decorating as I went into High School, and donated treats to bake sales, started getting my name out there and started to post more on Facebook. I became known for my cupcakes and loved bringing joy into people’s day with my treats! I then started to get orders, and ever since then, I have been working to build my name. I have now grown my business to a place where I have consistent orders every week, which is so exciting to me! Everything I make is from scratch, piped by hand, and frosted with buttercream only. I also use some recipes that have been favorites in my family, which is so special to me!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest obstacle that comes to mind would be timing. It has not always been easy trying to balance my bakery, school, other jobs and still try to socialize as well. In High School, I was known for being “scarily good at pulling all-nighters” to balance homework, marching band, and cakes! Haha! I now prioritize a good night’s sleep a lot more but still find that most of the cakes I decorate get the last finishing touches in the wee hours of the morning. I can’t sleep knowing a cake is due the next day and hasn’t been finished! I’ll sacrifice my sleep, and I will sleep when my work is done!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Lindsey’s Sweet Treats is an out-of-the-house bakery that specializes in custom cakes, cupcakes, and Oreo balls! I pride myself in not only the positive energy and love that is poured into everything I make but the quality as well. I am a hardcore perfectionist and can 100% say that I hold myself to the highest standard possible for everything. I’m not an employee. I do it all!!!! I’m not working a shift where I can solely decorate for 5 hours and leave. I stop when the job is done, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead!” This is my reputation for me to maintain, and this is what I live for!!!! In addition to quality, I am also very proud of the taste of my treats. I only use buttercream for decorations (no fondant!) so everything is not only hand piped but tastes great too. Why have a beautiful cake if it doesn’t taste amazing?
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Word of mouth has been my biggest resource when it comes to networking. Customer service is always very important to me, and I always try to go above and beyond for my customers. A smile goes a long way, and kindness can make someone’s day! I am always honest with everyone and always my true self.
