Conversations with McKenzie Winkler

Today we’d like to introduce you to McKenzie Winkler.

Hi McKenzie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story started 10 years ago when I first got into my professional cooking career. I started in banquets catering which I stuck with for about 6 years. Then moved on to working on to working on a commercial fishing ship in Alaska on and off for 3 years! We last year I’ve been in pastry and I’ve also been working as a personal trainer. I look forward to what my future brings. I hope to have a company that all encompasses food, wellness and health.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. Unfortunately chefs were paid a very low wage in the beginning. Now the standard has changed some. However, working as a female in the cooking industry has been difficult. When I was on the fishing ship it was very challenging but I love a challenge! Pushing myself continuously and overcoming challenges always offers strength and wisdom in the end.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
For work, I’m a personal trainer as well as a pastry chef and a private dining Chef. I also model on the side. I definitely specialize in savory cooking. I am probably known for my passion for food, both cooking it and eating it! I am most proud of my dedication in the industry as well as believing that I can always take on more challenges. I strongly believe in doing what you love! Something that sets me apart from others is that everything about my job I love. I’ve made it my mission to always be happy in what I do and who I work with I feel like it’s something too little people take seriously. I also take a lot of pride and offering a fair price for quality ingredients.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I loved food, eating it and cooking it just as much as I do to this day. I was a troubled child emotions definitely hit me harder then most of my peers, it seemed. Personality wise, I felt hyper fixated on how people treated one another and how I treated others. Interest wise, I was very creative I loved drawing and painting and all things creative. I was also very into nature and hiking as well as visiting local watering holes. Animals and nature were always a huge part of my childhood, I thank my daddy for that!
