Conversations with Opal Z

Today we’d like to introduce you to Opal Z.

Hi Opal, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been in the beauty industry for about twenty years, but the path here wasn’t linear—it was intentional. I started in my early twenties at the front desk, working my way through different med spas and earning my laser technician certification along the way. I always knew I wanted to stay in aesthetics, but I also knew I didn’t want to follow a traditional or crowded route. While exploring esthetics and nursing, I studied business at Austin Community College because one thing was always clear to me: I wanted to build something of my own.

About four years ago, I discovered paramedical tattooing—and it immediately clicked. I wasn’t searching for it; it found me. I saw a training online, followed the work, chose the program that aligned with me, and signed up. While I was in that class, I knew this was it. Not cosmetic tattooing. Not facials. Not another med spa. This was restoration work—real problem-solving.

What drew me in was how new and underserved this specialty was, especially in Austin. Very few people were correcting scars and stretch marks with ink, and even fewer were doing it at a high level. From there, I expanded into inkless scar and stretch mark revision using regenerative, stem-cell-based treatments so I could treat all skin types and all scars—not just what ink alone could handle.

That approach naturally led me into hair regrowth and scalp micropigmentation. SMP ties directly back to paramedical tattooing: it’s corrective, precise, and intentional. I chose the medical route, not the cosmetic one. I don’t do eyebrows or makeup. My work is focused entirely on revision and regrowth—scars, stretch marks, and hair loss.

I believe deeply in what I do because I use these treatments myself. I’ve treated my own scars, and at 43 and in perimenopause, I personally use my hair regrowth serum. My motivation has always been restoration, confidence, and helping people feel at home in their bodies again.

I’m still early in this chapter, but I’m clear on where I’m going. OGZY Skin & Scalp is built to become Austin’s go-to destination for paramedical revision and hair regrowth—and I’m just getting started.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth ride. There have been struggles at every stage. The first one was not knowing what I wanted to do. The second was figuring out how to do it once I finally knew—navigating the legal side, licensing, training, protocols, and all the technical details that no one really prepares you for.

Then comes the part no one talks about enough: finding clients. There’s a lot of money wasted in the beginning simply trying to figure out what works. I worked two jobs just to keep the business alive, took on loans and debt, and went long stretches with little to no income. My business didn’t make real money for the first year and a half, and there were many moments where I questioned myself and wondered if I was doing the right thing.

The hardest part wasn’t the workload—it was believing in myself when things were quiet and progress felt invisible. If it weren’t for my support system, I honestly wouldn’t have made it through that phase. It’s hard. But life is hard. And nothing worth doing is easy—if it were, everyone would do it.

What kept me going was knowing I was building something meaningful and specialized. The struggles didn’t push me away from this work—they clarified why I was meant to do it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My work focuses on paramedical revision and hair regrowth. I’m known for correcting scars, stretch marks, and hair loss using both ink-based techniques and regenerative treatments like stem cells and growth factor serums. This allows me to customize each treatment and work safely and effectively on all skin tones, including deeper and more melanated skin.

What inspires me is restoration. I work with people who’ve experienced surgery, trauma, hormonal changes, or hair loss, and I help them feel confident in their skin again without trying to change who they are. I’m driven by meaningful, results-based work that genuinely improves someone’s quality of life.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The most important qualities behind my success are persistence, discernment, and integrity. I don’t quit when things get hard, even when progress is slow or invisible. I take my time to learn deeply, choose intentionally, and build skill before expansion rather than chasing trends or shortcuts.

I also lead with integrity. I only offer services and treatments I truly believe in and would use on myself, and I’m committed to doing work that’s safe, thoughtful, and honest—especially when it comes to corrective and regenerative care. That combination of patience, precision, and trust in the long game is what continues to shape my growth.
