Conversations with Taylor Spencer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Spencer.

Hi Taylor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I joined Five Star Jewelry in 2018 as a graphic designer fresh out of college—and quickly fell in love with the world of fine jewelry and custom design. I was incredibly fortunate to be mentored by the original owner, who shared her knowledge, passion, and decades of experience with me.
During that time, I built strong relationships with our clients and deepened my expertise, earning both my Accredited Jewelry Professional (AJP) certification from GIA and my Registered Gemologist and Certified Appraiser credentials.
In 2024, I was honored with the opportunity to purchase the business—and I didn’t hesitate. After more than five years of working closely with our clients and designing meaningful, one-of-a-kind pieces, I knew this was where I was meant to be. With the unwavering support of my husband Jake, I took the leap into ownership. That same year, we also welcomed our first child, making 2024 an unforgettable milestone in both our family life and my professional journey.
Today, I’m proud to lead Five Star Jewelry with Jake by my side, an incredible team behind me, and a loyal community of clients who have made this dream possible.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Learning to become a fine jewelry designer felt like a natural fit—I truly enjoyed the process of creating meaningful, one-of-a-kind pieces for our clients. Transitioning into the role of business owner brought a new set of challenges, but it’s been an incredibly rewarding journey. Each role has taught me something different, and both continue to push me to grow in ways I never expected.
Buying the store while pregnant made for an especially exciting (and very busy) chapter. I had to quickly learn new skills to keep the business running smoothly and set an example for my team as I prepared them to manage things during my maternity leave.
Owning a business is fulfilling, but it’s also relentless. Case in point: the day I went into labor was the same day the air conditioning stopped working in the store—in the middle of June. It was chaotic, but also a perfect reminder that life rarely follows a script.
Through it all, it’s been an amazing journey filled with growth, lessons, and lots of memorable moments.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Five Star Jewelry is a woman-owned fine jewelry store specializing in diamond engagement rings and custom designs. We’re best known for creating one-of-a-kind engagement rings, as well as beautifully crafted diamond and gemstone jewelry. We also provide other services to our clients, like jewelry appraisals, jewelry repiare, etc.
What truly sets us apart is our passion for working closely with each client to bring their vision to life—whether that means helping a couple find the perfect engagement ring or redesigning a meaningful piece from heirloom jewelry. We take pride in offering exceptional quality and craftsmanship at competitive prices, but what we’re most proud of is the lasting relationships we build with our clients.
Our goal is always to make the experience personal, memorable, and fun—whether you’re celebrating a milestone or creating a new family treasure.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding the right mentor or building a strong network doesn’t always happen overnight—it’s about being open, showing up consistently, and building real relationships. Whether it’s with clients, vendors, or other business owners, I focus on listening, being helpful, and showing up as my authentic self. Some of the most meaningful connections I’ve made have come from just being present in my community and supporting others without expecting anything in return.
Surrounding myself with the best employees has been key to growing my business. A strong team not only helps bring your vision to life but also makes the journey more rewarding. And I couldn’t do any of it without the incredible support system I have in my husband—his encouragement and belief in me have made all the difference.
My advice? Be curious. Ask questions. Stay engaged. The most valuable opportunities often show up when you’re just being yourself and showing up for others.
