Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Hoang.
Hi Tiffany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Austin almost ten years ago for school and never left. I got a degree in Nutritional Sciences and upon graduation up until this moment, have been in operations and supply chain for consumer packaged goods companies. So how did I land on earrings? I am not sure, but my advice would be that it doesn’t matter what you studied in college or where you are in life, it is never too late to pick up a hobby or explore anything that may interest you.
I started Rooted in Color just a couple of months into the pandemic in 2020. With more time on my hands and making a conscious effort to shift my focus to the “life” aspect in the work-life balance, I was itching to find a creative outlet. My day job is a complete 360 from earring making so anytime I get to work on Rooted in Color initiatives, I am delighted and overjoyed. It has been a very humbling experience the past year and a half, and I am always learning ways to perfect my craft and technique.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every journey has its struggles, but it has all been worth the new discoveries and skills I gained along the way. Starting a business during the pandemic is a big obstacle itself, along with hesitancy and self-doubt especially as a new business owner and brand builder. What I struggled most with was the “what if”. What if people don’t like it? What if this is a waste of time? What I realized as time went on was if it brings you joy, it doesn’t matter and all the rest will follow.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Based in Austin, TX, all earrings are designed and made in my home studio where I find comfort and no limits when creating. Each pair is made with love and intention, and always lightweight. When creating a new collection I don’t usually plan out exactly what I am making, but rather start with a color palette I am feeling at the moment. Earrings are made of acetate cellulose (the same material as glasses frames) and polymer clay. The pairs made of polymer clay are all hand-mixed (imagine adult play-doh!), cut, cured, and sanded/buffed by hand. Extra love! My favorite part is assembling as I get to see the pair come to life and can’t wait to send them off to their new home.
Inspired by the women in my life and my affinity for plants, I launched Rooted in Color to celebrate joy and life. Whether you are feeling fun and playful or looking for a clean and simple look, Rooted in Color earrings are sure to help you make you feel the best version of yourself.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
We discovered Stride which is an app that easily tracks your business mileage and comes in handy during tax season. You just have to remember to turn it on before driving, haha!
