Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Dupré.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in the Piney Woods of East Texas to a family of art enthusiasts. I have been surrounded by the sounds of clicking shutters since I was little, from family trips to learning the mechanics of the camera. My early exposure to art allowed me to express myself through different mediums.
In 2011, I found my passion for light photography, when I began shooting images at night and exploring the art of light painting, a technique using a long exposure to capture trails of light. In 2021, I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in art education with a concentration in photography, and I hold a Texas Art teaching certification.
Throughout my undergrad, I studied jewelry making, drawing, oil painting, 2-D design, 3-D design, ceramics, studio photography, and printmaking. My BFA exhibit titled Fruits of Light consisted of 24 photographs of various fruits surrounded by streaks of colorful light. This collection of images allowed me to develop my own style by exploring different techniques of light painting such as color, texture, and depth. My passion for light painting inspires my art, and I continue to expand on my conceptual photography through still life imagery in nature.
Although photography is my medium of choice, I still experiment with an array of media. Now, I am teaching Audio/Visual Technology and Communication as well as Graphic Design and Illustration. Every day, I have a chance to educate future artists and inspire the next generation. Currently, I have a collection exhibition at The Williamson Museum in Georgetown, TX titled “Timeless Treasures.”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Throughout my artistic journey, I have faced several challenges as I believe all creatives do. It just took a few people to believe in me and push me to continue creating.
Some challenge I faced were not having the resources and finding galleries that would show my work coming from a small town. I always believed in myself and had the loving support of my family.
Also, the late nights and coming home from a long day of teaching to continue creating work and editing. By being creative and pushing my students it has made my art grow. I think they teach me, just as much as I teach them.
The biggest takeaway is to follow your passion and push through the obstacles to share your vision with the world.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My main content area of focus is in art education and photography. I found my passion for long exposure light painting photography in high school. I love the mystery and magic behind the camera. I think there is something so unique about images straight out of the camera. This is important to me because it keeps the hand in the process. I have experimented with steel wool, fiber optics, tube lights, and many more. I continue to use new tools and techniques with each and every light painting to create my vibrant style.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
In the upcoming years, I hope to have many more gallery shows and collections. I am fighting for photography as a fine art. Therefore, I believe there is a time and place for photoshop. With the uncertainty of AI, I hope to inspire young artist to express themselves using new technology as a skill to show their original designs.
