Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Jenkins.
Hi Alexandra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a Texas-based artist working out of San Marcos. I graduated with my BFA with an emphasis in painting from Texas State University in 2019. By the time I graduated, I had multiple public exhibitions and commissions across Texas and clients including The Boys and Girls Club.
I started doing art exclusively and selling murals after I was voluntarily laid off from my case management position at Austin Recovery in 2020. My first mural client was The Sobering Center. My experience and friendships with the recovery community around Austin gave me the step up I needed as an artist, landing me 3 murals, 1 public exhibition, a successful first auction, and a circle of support.
Since I started painting murals I have completed projects for more than 100 clients, including companies, private residences, galleries, and collectors across the United States.
Right now I am leaning into my special interest as an autistic individual and painting more flora and fauna. I’ve always been fascinated by plants and animals, and I can tell from the feedback I receive that my plant themed murals spread the most joy. One of my favorite things about murals is the joy I can see on people’s faces when they experience the art for the first time. Those moments, a long with the passion I have for art, keep me creating through the hard times.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The first two years were the hardest. It took me time to figure out marketing. I worked for a few months in a warehouse, and another few months at an addiction treatment center to keep my family afloat during the times when money got tight.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My most popular murals have been of flowers and foliage, and occasionally animals. I have autism, and plants and animals are some of my life long special interest. I have a couple hundred plants in my personal collection that I use as references when designing murals.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
When I first got started doing murals full time, the book GYST helped me get everything organized and plan better. It’s a great book for artist who aren’t sure where to start.
