Today we’d like to introduce you to Elsie Greer.
Hi Elsie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve been obsessing over sketchbooks and painting whatever my hearts desire since I can remember. I graduated with a bachelor’s in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in NYC. After one too many winters, I moved to Austin, TX. I’ve been part of the Texas art scene as a painter for over 10 years with a recent jump into the pool of Austin’s graphic design world. Outside of freelance work, my permanent residence is with the awesome folks at Blue Owl Brewing as their brand and product designer.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s been plenty of bumps, and I’m sure there will be plenty more!
One of my consistent struggles has always been finding affordable studio space. More recently, expanding my tools from the canvas onto the computer over the last few+ years has been a new challenge. But I’ve always intended to make a living by doing what I love and I’m thankful to have that opportunity! It’s been an illuminating experience, and I’m consistently enjoying learning new tricks and intermingling the two mediums, finding a balance between raw lines and clean illustrations.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Painting is my first and forever passion. Using oil and charcoal on canvas, my studies are usually of the feminine figure. You’ll see in my work that it’s not about creating a realistic portrait but instead, capturing that person through color and emotion. There’s always a story behind my work but what I enjoy most is hearing what other people get from those paintings.
In design, I’ve had the opportunity to grow and expand in a new direction. I’ve created work for local businesses and friends throughout Austin. It’s more of a collaboration and I really enjoy that. Within just Blue Owl Brewing, I’ve created over 25 package designs, collateral, and assets. I’m very proud to be self-taught and I think that while my hand is malleable, my style is different from what you typically see in both the Fine Art and Design world.
