Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Feikls
Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always loved to create in the kitchen and in the past year realized I could create a business from that passion of mine. As a child I would always help my mom in the kitchen and loved cooking/baking tasty foods. When I was 10, my mom passed away and I went into a deep depression that eventually evolved into a full blown eating disorder. The combination of grief + disordered eating had me avoiding the kitchen for years, I had lost all joy with food and creating in that way.
As a teenager I eventually found my way back to creating in the kitchen and started an instagram account to share my recipes online. Over the years of running that account, I built a small yet loyal community that have watched my transition from recipe content to lifestyle as I started to truly find myself again.
Then 4 years ago I left my small hometown in Pennsylvania and moved here to Austin with no clue what would follow. I spent the last few years building a community here and healing from the past. Then in spring of 2023 I started baking gluten free, dairy free cakes for my friend’s and I to enjoy. Naturally I shared them on my instagram and they started to get attention from people. A few months later I had people requesting to order cakes and actually pay for them which was never my intention.
In fall of 2023 I made the leap to try this out and built my website as I officially launched Cake Bae. In the past year of creating this business, I’ve learned SO much about myself and what it takes to believe in your vision.
Now Cake Bae is becoming as much of a personal brand as it is a home bakery. Constantly growing and teaching me what it takes to commit to a dream and show up for it day after day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Nope! There have been all kinds of road bumps along the way but that’s part of the journey. There are high seasons and low seasons and everything in between. I’ve struggled with defining what the brand “is” and with that, spent excess money on labels, packages, and event that I actually didn’t need; I’ve overbooked myself and forgotten about orders only to be baking all through the night; on and on, there are always lessons to learn!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself as a multi-hyphenate creative as I hate boxing myself in and find my work is always evolving! In this season I work as a Project Manager overseeing creative direction, I do social media consulting and video production, I’m building Cake Bae, and then I’m creating content for my personal brand.
I would say I’m most known for my content creation + kitchen skills. I love working with people to create content (whether that’s video, copy, or programs) and I love creating in the kitchen. Whether that’s baking for Cake Bae orders or cooking for private retreats and events.
What sets me apart is my personality and unique perspective. The people I work with chose me for the energy I bring and the way I show up 100%.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the community aspect of Austin, truly feels like a small town! The thing I like least is the traffic.
