Today we’d like to introduce you to Gillian Salerno-Rebic
Hi Gillian, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I picked up a camera in 2020 because I missed having a creative outlet. I started with street photography and got into nature scenes. From 2021-2022, I traveled all over the US, South America, and Europe, taking photos along the way. I started to get more intentional about taking photos of people in everyday scenes and major events that I witnessed along the way – a presidential inauguration in Chile, Bastille Day in Paris, and even the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. I decided to settle back in Texas at the end of 2022 and opened up my business formally in 2023. Photography has come naturally to me, partially because of my background in theatre and film, but also because of my inclination to people-watch and make up stories.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been an interesting journey to becoming a business owner. Learning how to value my time and keep my own schedule is a constant work in progress. I think the best rule I set for myself in the last year was to not try to do or be everything (photographically) to everyone. I love what I do, and if our visions don’t match, I want you to go find the best photographer for you. That being said, if you love thoughtful storytelling, details, intimate moments, and also getting deeply authentic, I’m your photographer.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Through and through, I am a storyteller. I think everyone is inherently interesting and has a meaningful story to tell. Sometimes, you’re telling that story with a headshot. Other times, it’s a party with a story. And my favorite of all, a love story. I adore spending time with couples in their space – their homes and their favorite places – to capture the in-between moments. Posing is great, but breathing and moving through a photo shoot that is just like a date or a hang at home are some of my favorite photographs to take. The more intimate the story, the better, in my opinion. I bet you’d be surprised how even a party of 40 close friends can still feel intimate when I’m telling the story through my lens.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My friends are the most amazing cheerleaders. I’ve never felt so supported. Early on in my business journey, I asked some friends to be my guinea pigs with their partners. The extended time and trust my friends have put in me to support my goals has been invaluable to building my business.
