Daily Inspiration: Meet Guy Boyan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Guy Boyan.

Hi Guy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Three guys walk into a bar. One says to the next guy, want to make your own frisbees. Absolutely we all
Said.

Zach Jansen, Chris Herbert, and myself spent the next two years formulating our idea.

In 2017 we released our first Disc Golf disc the – ALPHA.

When people asked us what made us different we spoke about serial number system that we put on every single disc which lets you know the plastic, the name , the batch or run number, and the year produced. This gives you a way to track down the exact disc you are looking for.

In 2020 we took over the H.O.T.T events that we grew up playing . It stands for heart of Texas tour.. Disc Golf events around Texas. We grew this tour from 12 events to nearly 30. This would lay the groundwork for a foundation of supporters in a community. We could then help foster.. This would also train us to get ready for the national tour events that we would run and be a part of now annually..

Fast-forward to now and we have a disc golf store at a brewery -austin Beer works, Including a taproom , food trucks, a 9 hole putting (short course) and a championship level 18 hole course that just ranked as the #2 best course at a brewery!

Our store on site sells Discs , disc bags, merchandise ,hosts weekly and monthly events, and his home for the Texas Disc Golf Hall of Fame.

You can find our products at mintdiscs.com or at many of the disc shops around the country and the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
During Covid when everyone was stuck inside Disc Golf double overnight as it was one of the only activities you can go outside and do. Everyone took a friend to play and it’s stuck for a few years. Over time we’ve grown, not always a lot but we’ve continued to push the envelope every step of the way. if we didn’t give uncomfortable, we wouldn’t keep growing..

We’ve had our events, trailer stolen and eventually recovered.

We had our warehouse catch on fire from a neighboring business, and half of our inventory was destroyed.

We’ve had to restructure our business post Covid resizing back down to just Zach and myself daily with one person in our store each day it is open.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We’re one of the few people in Texas that apply custom foils / designs/ colors with a heat press to frisbees daily. We use interesting techniques with a laser and lining it up with a chalk marker and creating multiple layers of different foils, which was result in beautiful pieces of art on frisbees.. not only is it getting an artist designed the right art. It’s about the application of foils on the frisbee itself, which can create very beautiful pieces on one of your favorite toys.. all of this is Dunn by eye using a free mounted system for speed and flexibility.

What does success mean to you?
Success is waking up and wanting to go to work and enjoying it so much the time to end comes without you even realizing it. It’s about having flexibility and time over wealth and spectacle.
