Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Antunez.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Karla Antunez. I was born and raised in Maracaibo, Venezuela. From a very young age, I adored everything art related! I vividly remember classmates asking me to do their projects for them. And yet, each time, the teachers would tell them, “Karla did this artwork for you, didn’t she?”
I went on to study architecture at Rafael Urdaneta University. In 2013, I immigrated to the United States, with my husband and mentor, Johan Avila. This a man to whom I owe all knowledge related to this wonderful world of tattoos! I always appreciated the artistry and Johan insisted on teaching me the fundamentals. He insisted that I had the talent, but it wasn’t until January 2019 that I truly invested myself in the pursuit of becoming a full-time tattoo artist. Since then, I have dedicated myself to learning everything I can and practicing endlessly. My number one priority is honing my craft and making my clients happy!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So far, I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy the world of tattooing without any inconvenience or obstacle. About a year ago, I started from scratch here in Austin, after moving from Miami. Luckily, I was met with kindness from the colleagues I met along the way. These friends have made the challenge of starting over in a new place, as a mom of four, a far easier and more enjoyable experience.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My specialization is fine line tattoos. These tattoos use a different type of needle; usually, a single needle, that allows me to achieve subtle and discreet results. This type of tattoo is quite complex and requires professionalism, since achieving a truly refined line (usually in small size) requires great effort and knowledge. I feel very proud that I’ve met these high standards, by creating hundreds of tattoos with excellent results.
I think what differentiates me from others is the great love and passion I have for what I do. I treasure the opportunity to create unique designs, as well and work with my customers to refine artwork that suits their style and skin. Over the years, I’ve earned the trust and affection of those I’ve collaborated with in composing minimalist tattoos. The smile on my clients’ faces and their absolute joy is my greatest reward.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, success is defined by obtaining everything I set out to do- goals, dreams, longings; everything that requires perseverance, effort and dedication to be achieved. Once I’ve achieved it, it generates a feeling of absolute well-being and gives me the confidence to truly believe that I am definitely a successful person.
