Today we’d like to introduce you to Marguerite Mannix
Hi Marguerite, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I first fell in love with photography when I was 15 and haven’t stopped shooting since! I grew up in San Antonio and as early as I can remember I was painting, playing piano, and making my own books. My mom is very creative and always encouraged me to follow my passions. She made sure I was always surrounded by art in our family home, through school, books, or our local artistic community.
Everything really seemed to click for me when I picked up a camera in high school and I learned to shoot with film and it remains an integral part of my practice. Shooting with film allowed me to enter another world while still engaging with this one. The process of composing and crafting an image like I would a painting became intertwined with energy work and storytelling and the combination is a rush of adrenaline like no other. I knew that photography was something I would do for the rest of my life but I had no idea what being a photographer meant.
After graduating from UT Austin with a BA in Art History I moved to LA where I gained experience working as a photographer and art director throughout my twenties. I combined my love of music and design as a way to work in the entertainment industries, learning under the wings of top-tier professionals.
Throughout my journey as a photographer I have explored a wide range of subject matter, but what shows is that I am always a student of my subject first. My photographs aim to capture the beauty in everyone and go deep, revealing inner worlds and emotions.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There can’t be light without darkness, so the road is never easy but I feel the experience is richer and full of depth because of the struggles. I don’t even think of them as struggles anymore because I expect there to always be obstacles. Sometimes it’s about getting through them, finding strength and resilience, while others they are a blessing telling you to get more creative and make different choices.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional photographer and multidisciplinary artist.
I specialize in film photography, and my main focus is always people, light, and emotion. My photography often exists somewhere in-between dream and reality. I would say I’m known for my vibrant, intimate images and capturing small moments that are full of life. Some major influences for me are impressionist paintings, Annie Leibovitz’s portraiture, and films from directors such as Sofia Coppola.
I’m always looking to the future and I don’t like to entertain ego, so there’s not anything that I would say I’m most proud of. I’m just happy to be here.
Besides photography I also paint, write, make music!
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
