Daily Inspiration: Meet Mason Petmecky

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Petmecky.

Hi Mason, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my professional career as a professional land surveyor in 2006. When the economy crashed, I was laid off by three different engineering firms. While on unemployment I went into my local fish store just to grab some water for one of my fish tanks and I saw and now hiring sign. At this time in 2008 now hiring science more practically extinct. So I took a massive pay cut and started working at a fish store. People started asking me to come take a look at their aquarium and help them out. I saw a business opportunity and brought this to the store owner and we started a maintenance division. After running the maintenance division for about a year and a half, I decided that this is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and I brought that to my boss’s attention and he responded with he will never pay me more than $13 an hour. So I handed in my two weeks right then and there started the fish whisperer in 2010 and have been going strong ever since.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I came from a poor family so I had no money. I started my business with no loans, no credit cards and no help from anyone. Finding business in 2010 was particularly difficult because advertisement technology is nothing like what it is. Today. My work spoke for itself and I began to acquire many clients through word of mouth.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I design, install and maintain custom aquariums. Freshwater salt, water and reef tanks. What I’m known for is my knowledge of corals and reef tanks. What I’m most proud of is how long I’ve had some of my clients. I also have more five-star reviews than any other company. And I also have 100% five stars. What sets me apart from others is that I am a Hands-On owner. I do everything myself.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
