Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Zelenin.
Matthew, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Originally from Bloomington, IN, I started my musical journey studying classical piano. I competed on an international stage and earned the chance to perform at Carnegie Hall at the age of 11. As a teenager I was then introduced to the world of jazz, and I began to fall in love with the rhythms as well as the improvisational aspects of the music. I balanced my practice between classical and jazz as I went through high school and began college.
Studying at Indiana University, I was immersed in a wide variety of different musical styles and opportunities. I played with jazz, funk, soul, and country bands, including the IU Soul Revue and other ensembles. I also began singing with IU’s nationally touring a cappella group Another Round, serving as the musical director for three years.
After graduating, I knew I wanted to move somewhere else, and eventually I decided on Austin. I didn’t have any family or friends in the area and had only been one time before, but I was excited to spread my wings in the live music capital of the world. Upon moving, I started attending local jam sessions and slowly but surely started to make new connections and friends in the Austin music scene. Three years later, I perform regularly throughout Central Texas, playing my own music and working with other local singers and jazz artists.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While music has always been an integral part of my life, my relationship with it has changed many times. Navigating career changes and personal growth has led me to continuously question what role making music should play in my life. Furthermore, feelings of burnout and exhaustion have sometimes required me to shift my focus or step away briefly. For that reason, I enjoy playing multiple genres with different groups and projects, so things stay fresh and interesting. The ebb and flow of it all is what allows me to continue to grow, both as a musician and a person.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Primarily, I’m a pianist, singer, and composer. I specialize in jazz and funk, but I enjoy playing all genres. As a gigging musician in Austin, I’ve played in a wide range of settings, including weddings, jazz clubs, restaurants and piano bars. My classical training gives me a deep understanding of music theory which I apply to all my performances as well as my compositions, arrangements, and song production.
People have described my playing style as both warm and intense. With everything I play, I try to tell a story, one that might not have words but can make you feel something. I pride myself on my dedication to always serve the music I play while still being receptive to the environment and audience. That combined with my versatility in many different styles allows me to take on many different projects and approach each one through its own unique lens.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
The two most important apps I use are some of the most simple ones: Notes and Google Calendar. I carve out all of my to-do lists, arrangement ideas, gear needs, etc. in there. That helps me stay organized with my priorities. Staying vigilant on updating my calendar ensures I don’t double-book or overcommit myself.
I’m not a big reader, but I’m working on reading Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations at the moment, so I’ll have to give you an update when I’m finished.
