Daily Inspiration: Meet Raphael Umscheid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raphael Umscheid.

Hi Raphael, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been a visual person. I started out drawing dinosaurs, then sharks and whales. When I started painting I played at abstracted landscapes and slowly arrived at figurative painting via photography. Now I combine figurative, landscape and body as landscape. It’s all still there.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Finding oneself isn’t necessarily linear. I found myself when I stopped trying so hard.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a painter and photographer. I’m proud of many accomplishments. When I started I never imagined I would be published in GQ or playboy or in Vogue Italia’s Photovogue. Finding a unique voice in painting and feeling the slowness of that process has been something that I am savoring and look forward to continuing.

What’s next?
In late August I am showing paintings at BFG gallery in Austin. Beyond that, continuing to hone my work while challenging myself with the unfamiliar. Looking to find the perfect studio space to realize larger works. Connecting with amazing people on this journey.
