Today we’d like to introduce you to Rashmi Thakur. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Today we’d like to introduce you to Rashmi Thakur a Visual Artist based in Austin:
Rashmi Thakur, a respected visual artist living in the vibrant city of Austin, Texas, has dedicated the last 15 years to cultivating an extraordinary career that boldly transcends the conventional boundaries of traditional painting. Art and creativity have been integral to Rashmi’s identity since her childhood. Drawing and painting have been constant companions, inspired by a family valuing creativity and engineering design. Navigating the realms of both art and science, she eventually gravitated towards the creative path. Rashmi pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Arts and Design at the prestigious Sir JJ School of Arts in Mumbai, specializing in Textile Design. Following stints as a designer in garment export houses and at the ‘Designer’s Edge,’ a specialized artisan store in Mumbai that brought artists and designers together, Rashmi’s journey took an unforeseen trajectory. In 2002, her relocation to New York with her husband led her to delve into Fashion Styling at the Fashion Institute of Technology. However, the arrival of her baby prompted a pivotal shift. Faced with the challenges of a family far from home, Rashmi took a reflective step back, reevaluating her path. This introspective pause guided her back to designing and painting, resuming her journey in visual arts and design.
Rashmi’s dedication to her art and commitment to nurturing creativity extends beyond her journey. Actively involved in Austin’s diverse art communities, including the Waterloo Watercolor Group, the 620 Art Group, the Bee Cave Arts Foundation, and the Creative Art Society, she leaves an indelible mark. She has done multiple commission works, and her impact reverberates in charity fundraising events worldwide, supporting organizations such as Chinmaya Mission, Riverbend Church, Bee Cave Arts Foundation(BCAF), HTCCLI, SEWA, and Wildlife Trust India(WTI).
Rashmi has conducted workshops for all age groups and has taught in art societies, including the Waterloo Watercolor Group, BCAF, and SEVA. Her accolades include various awards, including recognition for a piece displayed at the BCAF by a jury in Paestum, Italy. Beyond the aesthetic realm, Rashmi acknowledges the healing power of art, having experienced its therapeutic qualities during challenging times. Knowing the value of mindfulness and creativity beyond academics, she felt compelled to give back to the next generation of creatives through teaching and mentoring. In 2015, her family moved to Austin, TX, where she founded Art Chakra Studio around ‘Learn, Believe, and Create.’
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I faced numerous challenges along the way. For instance, when I moved to the United States on an H4 Visa, I couldn’t work, and the waiting period before I could restart was quite long. Building a creative circle in a new place where I didn’t know anyone was tough. Starting over in Austin presented its own set of challenges. Fortunately, I could connect with some fantastic artists and mentors, and their guidance and support were instrumental in my artistic journey. Visual art is a path I took out of passion and love, but conveying to people that painting is more than just a hobby—it’s a career path—proved challenging. Like any artist, sharing your art exposes your vulnerability, and overcoming doubts is natural. Furthermore, finding time to be a daily painter remains an ongoing challenge.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I enjoy working with various artistic mediums, such as watercolor for its fluidity, acrylic for its vibrant colors, texture, and versatility, and oil paints for their earthy and timeless appearance. Additionally, I explore textile and wearable art for their colorful and textured decorative qualities. My artworks draw inspiration from my multicultural background and interactions with nature and diverse cultures throughout my life and travel. Being an art educator and mentor brings me immense pride. Guiding young and adult artists in their creative journeys is challenging yet fulfilling. It involves allowing individuals to develop their unique artistic styles yet practical approaches. My artistic process involves experimentation with different mediums and styles, selecting them based on the unique demands of each subject. Sometimes, I even use multiple mediums on the same subject to observe diverse outcomes. Additionally, as required by my clients for commissioned works, I can proficiently work in various styles, including contemporary, realistic, and abstract. This distinguishes my work. I am very thankful for this lovely gift, nourishing it with self-development and educating others in the arts. I hope you will enjoy these works as much as I enjoyed creating them.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Certainly! In my pursuit of advocating for a wholesome lifestyle and embracing natural living, I teamed up with a like-minded friend. Together, we introduced Aura ATX, a line of meticulously handcrafted, all-natural soaps, in the year 2022. I take great pride in these products.
Beyond that, my interests extend to playing table tennis and dancing, with some believing I have untapped potential in these areas. Additionally, I am an avid enthusiast of science and art history, finding joy in immersing myself in podcasts on these subjects.
