Daily Inspiration: Meet Salwa Yordi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Salwa Yordi

Hi Salwa , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Salwa Yordi, a Venezuelan immigrant of Middle Eastern descent, has carved a remarkable path in the vibrant cultural landscape of Austin, Texas. Best known for her engaging presence on Telemundo Austin’s entertainment segments and as the founder of Farandula Texas, a media platform highlighting Austin’s dynamic cultural and community events, Salwa stands out as one of the first Spanish-speaking entertainment reporters in the city. Her journalistic prowess extends to covering prestigious national industry events like the Latin Grammy Awards, People en Español, and the Latin Billboards through Farandula Texas.

Beyond her media contributions, Salwa currently serves as the Director of Communications at Latinitas, Austin’s only 100% bilingual STEM education nonprofit, where she continues to make a lasting impact. Her journey in the United States began in 2001 at the age of 15, when she, along with her single mother and sister, moved to Killeen, TX. Faced with the challenge of not knowing the English language, Salwa embarked on her American journey at Ellison High School, where she supported her family by working as a cashier and cleaning attendant at a car wash. Despite the obstacles, she graduated with honors from Ellison and went on to attend The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Salwa’s commitment to community outreach extends beyond her professional roles. Before her current position, she played key roles at Glimmer Austin, handling resource development, communications, and administration, and at HomeAid Austin, where she served as the Development and Outreach Manager. In this role, Salwa spearheaded initiatives for the homeless and indigent, addressed supply shortages for families, and forged alliances to create opportunities and safe spaces for Austin’s homeless population. Salwa Yordi’s journey is a testament to her resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on her community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path to path to success is far from smooth, but my story is an inspiring one of overcoming adversity through hard work, passion, and a deep sense of purpose. From the language barrier she faced as a young immigrant to breaking into the entertainment industry and later making a difference through nonprofit work, she has shown that resilience, adaptability, and dedication can help turn even the toughest challenges into opportunities for growth and positive impact.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Digital Transformation and the Rise of Streaming and Social Media Platforms
Shift: Traditional broadcast journalism (including local news outlets like Telemundo Austin) is increasingly being supplemented or replaced by streaming services and social media platforms. In particular, younger generations are consuming news and entertainment content via social media (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube) and on-demand streaming services rather than traditional television.
Impact on Your Industry:
There will likely be an even greater shift towards digital content, which means adapting to newer formats like live streaming, interactive media, and short-form video content.
The demand for real-time, personalized content will grow, with audiences wanting immediate updates and more immersive storytelling (e.g., live reporting, virtual events).
Your role as an entertainment reporter may require embracing new platforms (like TikTok or YouTube) to engage with viewers and stay relevant. You may also see increased opportunities for cross-platform content where the same story is told across multiple formats (social media posts, long-form articles, live broadcasts, etc.).
2. Increased Focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Shift: The focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion will continue to be at the forefront in media and nonprofit sectors. Audiences are increasingly demanding more authentic representation and inclusivity in both content and corporate practices. Media outlets and organizations will continue to be pressured to reflect the diversity of their communities and to cover stories that matter to underrepresented groups.
