Daily Inspiration: Meet Thelonious Love And Sean Maddox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thelonious Love And Sean Maddox.

Hi Thelonious Love, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sean- Theo and I met years ago when I moved back to Austin. I knew he was a musician and one of the few artists in town that really took his craft seriously. It wasn’t till around the pandemic that we got close and he started including me in his music creation process. I wanted help so I started coming to rehearsals and filming BTS content and performances.

This is not how I remember it but Theo says he overheard me riffing to one of the songs and the band stopped to get me a microphone. I’ve been a part of the band ever since.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Theo– Being in a relationship with me is already hard. When you add the responsibility of being the band leader I’m not always the most cuddly. We both have our own ways of getting ready for a show, so learning to respect those differences has been really important.

I tend to go super quiet and focused before performing — I need that calm space — while Sean gets pretty anxious before a show and can be energetically all over the place. It’s annoying, but I love him and as a band leader I’ve learned I can’t always be an asshole. We’ve had to set some healthy boundaries to make sure both the band and our relationship stay strong. It hasn’t always been smooth, but we’ve worked through it together in real time. As long as we’re on the same page and aiming for the same goal, we manage to get through whatever comes our way.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Theo- We live in Texas. We’re queer theatre kids in an interracial relationship. Sean is a gifted singer and dancer. I write pros, plays, and poems. Sean’s theatre training led him to start doing rock and pop music. My writing led me to hip hop & activism. Our collaboration stems inspiration from artists like Phil Collins, Outkast and Erykah Badu. Sean has strength in graphic design and film editing while I take the lead with putting our name out there. Our music makes you feel good and think about yourself. We hope you enjoy it.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Sean- Success is consistently doing the things that I love. People still wanting to book me. Job security. Happiness!

Theo- I wanna be the breadwinner of my family. I wanna tell our stories and make sure we have place to sleep,
