Daily Inspiration: Meet Tina Huang

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tina Huang.

Hi Tina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Taiwan, came to the states in 2019 for graduate school in Engineering. As I missed home a lot, I began baking to alleviate my homesickness and satisfy my Asian appetite. In July 2020, I decided to bake a cake for my own birthday. It was not perfect at all but that cake reminded me of all the great childhood memories. That was the actual beginning of my baking journey. Later on, I was addicted. I started looking for baking tutorials on Youtube and doing research and experiments on recipes. I grew so much and improved my baking skills a lot since then. I also shared my bakes on Instagram, Facebook, and the Taiwanese groups in Austin. Some Taiwanese who also missed the Asian flavor desserts would come to me and order custom cakes from me. That was how I started my small cake business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Whenever an item came out of my oven that looked or tasted weird, I may not always know what I did wrong. Every failure could be struggling because I had to find out the reasons and solutions by myself. I never went to any pastry school or got any baking education, I taught myself everything. The process from failure to a successful bake could take a lot of time and cost a lot of money. Sometimes I would think of giving up and moving on, but I always encouraged myself to finish what I’ve started because of those positive feedbacks I got from my customers. I also want to thank my husband for supporting me from the beginning no matter what. He is also the reason why I keep baking. He is the biggest fan of my bakes.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have a full-time job as an Analyst. I deal with data and spreadsheets during days, and I bake when I am available in the evenings and on weekends. I am satisfied with my lifestyle now as I can grow professionally with a career, have a stable income while keeping doing the things I love so much. I do not bake for a living, but baking has become a huge part of my life.

What makes you happy?
The taste of my own bakes makes me happy undoubtedly. The positive feedbacks from my customers and those who ate my bakes make me super happy. Those are the reasons why I keep learning and improving. I want to make others happy when they eat my bakes!
