Daily Inspiration: Meet Umy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Umy.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Many years ago, I had a back injury that rendered me immobile for months. After I finished the entire catalog of Netflix, I discovered Masterclass on Magic taught by Penn & Teller. At the end, Penn Jillette said, Do you know why we do magic? Because it’s to bring joy and delight people.” In the depth of paralyzing pain, the dream of performing magic gave me hope. I’ve been pursuing classical sleight-of-hand card magic under mentorship of Jason Ladanye ever since.

I started off busking and doing zoom show. Since 2023, I put more focus on doing more LIVE for private parties and corporate events including Amazon, Google, Hudl, and The University of Texas in Austin.

Today, I travel the world to bring joy and delight as many people as I can.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
During COVID shutdown, live performance was in idle worldwide. Performing for the audience in-person was not an option. I tried to substitute by virtual shows but there’re limits to the experience. However, the lockdown gave me more time to incubate my skills and showmanship. Once everything I opened back up, I was ready to book gigs.

My current struggle is to work hard and make sure I give the audience the best show possible.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m classical sleight-of-hand card magician. I have a show called Umy’s Beautiful Lies. I take my audience to a journey inside their own life and explore the possibility of perceptive reality.

The most exciting shows I’ve done were during our mini world-tour where we visited, Oslo, Paris, Tokyo, Bangkok, and Hin Son. I’m a very few pure sleight-of-hand artist. I’ve mastered gambling techniques which allows me to manipulate play cards to achieve feats seem impossible to most lay people. I utilize man-made miracles in magic performance to allow me to tell the audience the stories I couldn’t have told otherwise.
