Today we’d like to introduce you to Zachary Kersey.
Hi Zachary, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
All my life i have been traveling, and I feel like my music represents that. I grew up practically playing instruments. I remember in second grade my mom signed me up for violin lessons. We went from public lessons at a school, quickly to private lessons with a teacher one on one. These private lessons were so dreadful to me because i had 4 other siblings and i had to sit through everyone’s personal rehearsal. All throughout my life i was in band class, private lessons and really set up to do something in music when I grew up. All while I am growing up, I was very unsure how to pursue making music as a profitable career. When i finally graduated high school, my parents bought me a Macbook pro. Somewhere along the way i found out about Logic Pro x, A music production software. That was the first application i downloaded on my macbook, and that was the beginning of my music creating career! I began making beats all day every day. Really on some Kanye West vibe, I was eating sleeping and breathing music. I made so many beats and was up to making 10 a day at a point in time. I always strive to get back to that level of focus. Many years went by of me perfecting my craft and practicing, and i realized that I didnt have anyone making songs on these beats i had. I took it upon myself to record a song, and I remember crying in my closet after recording because the experience was so profound and i found something i wanted to do the rest of my life! I began recording vehemently leaving very little time for social life. All the while I was enrolled in college, I would truly only go to my classes to see my friends. Eventually I began skipping classes to freestyle and make music with my friends. Definitely not something I would recommend, but everyone’s story and path is different! When I moved to Texas, I lived in San Antonio first. There, I made a name for myself in the local music scene and regularly attended/performed at open mics and performances. Living in Texas, I still play my saxophone, I have picked up the Bass Guitar, Electric Guitar, and Piano. Now I live in Austin Texas, creating music daily and meeting so many amazing friends, so many talented artists, and close collaborators. I consistently release music and I made a name for myself! I’m excited to continue my journey in the live music capitol of the world!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth at all! In the beginning, I humbly expected everything to just work out for me. I felt like i was very talented and knew all the right people. I believed it was God’s plan to bless me in that way early on. I came to quickly find that God works in mysterious ways, and none of what I had selfishly planned came to fruition. Whatever his plan is for me, I am content and I am happy it wasn’t what i wanted for myself. I don’t believe i would have been able to sustain the dream future I had imagined had it happened so early on in my career. Despite all of this, I’ve never lost my sense of who I was. I did have some seasons of believing that music wouldn’t work out, but i never stopped working! I struggle with time blocking because when I start a song or a beat, I so desperately want to finish what I began, but I’ve been coming to realize that time blocking is very necessary in order to touch the many subjects I have to do in one day
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a musician and singer/ songwriter. I specialize in generating Ideas, blending genres, trying new things, and producing content to promote. I am the most proud of the rock music I make. It makes me so happy and satisfied to create a song from start to finish. I am set apart from others by the amount of music i create, and the styles of music I create. I can create a song from start to finish without picking up the phone to call anyone. With my vocals and production style, I can confidently say that I am in my own lane and there is nobody like me in Austin Texas!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has played such a role in my life, because i have had so many moments where i shouldn’t have been in a room or I was not qualified for a job. i believe my “Luck” comes from God. I’ve been blessed with the confidence to walk into rooms like Jesus sent me and i feel like that has an effect on the “Luck” in my career!
