Denise Alamo of North Austin on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Denise Alamo. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Denise , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
One of my first loves and biggest joys in life are crystals. Since childhood, I have always had a fascination for them. From having a granite rock collection when I was younger to buying my very first clear quartz crystal as a teenager, crystals have always had the power to hold my attention for hours on end.

There is a local crystal shop here in Austin where I can easily spend at least three hours browsing and connecting with various crystals. As I walk from one end of the store to the other mingling with the staff and sparkly gemstones, time literally does not exist in my world. This actually happens at any establishment that has crystals. I lose track of time but I gain the opportunity to be that little girl again with stars in her eyes just gawking at the beauty and intelligence of nature made literally millions of years ago. Holding something so ancient helps me remember who I am in the grand scheme of things and without fail always centers me back into myself again.

It’s this deep connection that inspired me to create my YouTube series, Unearthed, where I combine intuitive crystal messages with immersive sound baths, each featuring the birthstone gemstone for the month. These videos are my way of bringing that same wonder, grounding, and timeless magic I feel in the crystal shops to others—inviting viewers to slow down, connect, and experience the healing presence of these ancient stones from wherever they are in the world.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Certainly. I am Denise Alamo, founder and creator of Making Life Golden. I hold certifications in sound healing and Usui Reiki. My offerings include customized workshops focused on mental health and well-being, oracular guidance, crystal channeling, spiritual mentorship and of course, crystal reiki and sound healing. I created Making Life Golden with the heartfelt intention of sparking healing in those in need through holistic modalities. My offerings gently support those experiencing mental, emotional, physical, or spiritual challenges.

The foundation of Making Life Golden is built on three guiding pillars: Know Yourself, Be Yourself, and Love Yourself. My work weaves together aspects of all three pillars, and I am committed to embodying this daily. I also incorporate the healing energies of crystals into my sessions, creating a tailored, intuitive approach for each client.

My work includes collaborating with community partners such as faith congregations, schools, libraries, cultural conference events and nonprofit wellness collectives. I’ve begun this work in Travis and Bastrop Counties and I am continuing to expand my outreach throughout the greater Austin area. I also share my offerings at crystal shops, metaphysical gatherings, and holistic fairs. Whether working privately or in group settings, my intention is always to create safe, supportive spaces where people can heal, grow, and feel truly seen and heard.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
This makes me think of my family. My parents worked in the hospitality industry for many years, and as a child, I observed moments that left lasting impressions on me. My mom, Lystra, instilled in me the importance of always taking pride in my work. My dad, Jim, in his later years, struck out on his own as an entrepreneur, opening both a convenience store and a restaurant.

My aunt, Patricia, a private duty nurse, showed me what heart-centered, high-quality care truly looks like. She extended this same level of care not only to her patients, but also to animals and plants. The way she honored and celebrated life in all forms inspired me to continue my family’s legacy of being a beacon of light and care for the community, animals, and nature.

I have embraced this legacy and given it my own unique expression through the creation of Making Life Golden. I take great pride in my work as an entrepreneur, providing the highest quality care and service. I am doing what I love and loving what I do.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, a few actually. Starting a business, and keeping it going isn’t always smooth sailing. There are so many moving parts and behind-the-scenes challenges that often go unseen. Tending to the legal, financial, and operational upkeep of the business, while managing everything else in life, can feel overwhelming as a solo business owner.

There were times in my personal life that felt incredibly heavy, and I just didn’t have the energy to give my business the attention it needed. I even thought to myself, “Maybe I should just dissolve my business and try again later.” But in those moments, I came to understand that challenges are part of the journey. It’s okay to trust the process, no matter how difficult it becomes.

On the other side of the pain and struggle, there is growth, wisdom, knowledge, expansion, and transformation. Trusting the process is worth it because it allows you to witness your own power and potential.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
My personal health and well-being is my first and foremost long-term commitment. I believe that if I am not showing up for myself first, I cannot show up for anyone or anything else with the same energy and quality of presence I give to myself each day. I have learned there are real consequences to not filling up my cup first.

Not everyone shows up as their best self all the time, and that’s okay. Our best looks different from day to day. By caring for myself first, I am able to meet others with deeper compassion and a greater presence, letting them know it is okay to be exactly where they are. We are all works in progress, and I believe saying “yes” to yourself is one of the most loving and compassionate choices you can make.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
What would remain loud and clear would be my golden light within. My friend likes to call it, “The gold in your soul.” Names and roles can change. Possessions come and go. However, you, as an individual, in all of your divine wholeness, remain.

Underneath all of the labels and categories society likes to keep, the golden light remains as your legacy. With the time you have been given here, contributing to sharing your unique golden signature with the world will always be felt and never forgotten.
