Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Jones.
Hi Chelsea, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have wanted to be a licensed architect since I knew what an architect was in 7th grade. That was always the focus. Always the goal. The internal pull to start my residential architecture firm only happened much later. I began my residential firm in southeast Austin in late 2021, and the more client projects I worked on, the more I felt like I was doing something I was meant to do, like all the pieces of my life were falling into place. Don’t get me wrong, I was terrified. Terrified of taking on this endeavor of starting a business, but also afraid of failure and letting clients down. I could easily let this fear paralyze me and continue my regular 9-5, but I knew I would always regret not letting this pull propel me into something greater. What I love about residential design is how personal it is. One of the most trusted things someone can do is welcome you into their home and help design it. This takes this trust up to 10 notches. It’s not something I take lightly.
Can you tell us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth?
Any part of being an entrepreneur is not easy. What probably inhibits me the most on my business journey is that I have let myself get in the way by second-guessing ideas. I am also putting up my upfront capital for the business with no promises that I will profit or have clients. It’s a great leap of faith. There have been times I have felt so alone on this entrepreneurial journey since I don’t have a business partner or employees because this is my dream and what drives me. No two passions or dreams are the same, so finding the constant motivation and diligence to keep going when it isn’t always sunshine and rainbows is one of the hardest roads to navigate.
We’ve been impressed with Chelsea Jones Studio, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
Chelsea Jones Studio is a full-service residential architecture firm where we can be involved from the beginning stages of design through the project’s construction. We work closely with the contractor to ensure the client’s wants and needs are being met. We can work on renovations, additions, or a new-build home where we figure out the client’s wants and needs, big picture ideas, budget, and schedule and work within those parameters to achieve a successful project. Lastly, we also do what I nickname the “I Gotta See It” feature, where if a client’s significant other is anything like mine, it’s hard for them to visualize the outcome of a project or its potential. We can provide an additional rendering service of what the design project looks like to either show a significant other or to confirm everything about the design is cohesive. We also assist by doing full construction drawings and can help with permitting. When you work with my firm, you are working directly with me, and I am involved every step of the way.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I liked to break the rules. The same still rings true today. I like going against the grain. With design, some rules are meant to be broken or rules that are only sometimes applicable. I also enjoyed problem-solving growing up, and that’s really what design is: figuring out how to meet the client’s wants & needs within specific parameters.
