Today we’d like to introduce you to Don O’Neil.
Hi Don, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Luna Gardens grew out of a lifelong love for gardening and a deep desire to create something beautiful, open, and alive.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to plants, outdoor spaces, and the feeling that comes from being surrounded by nature. Gardening has always been more than a hobby for me, it has been a way to slow down, create, nurture, and connect with the world around me. Over time, that love evolved into a bigger dream: to build a space that other people could experience and enjoy, too.
Before Luna Gardens, I was living in Las Vegas. While Las Vegas has its own kind of energy, I found myself craving something different. I needed more greenery, more land, more freedom, and more room to breathe. I wanted to leave behind the sterility of the desert city environment and move toward “greener pastures,” both literally and figuratively. I wanted space to build something from the ground up, something unique that could be shared with others.
When we found the property in Lockhart, we saw the possibility immediately. It felt like a blank canvas, but one with so much potential beyond what anyone could have imagined. We imagined gardens, gatherings, celebrations, music, weddings, and community events all taking place in a setting that felt natural and welcoming. We didn’t want to create a traditional cookie-cutter venue, and we haven’t. We wanted Luna Gardens to feel personal, flexible, and alive. A place where every event could become its own expression.
Building Luna Gardens has been a journey of patience, creativity, and faith in the vision. We’ve worked to shape the property into a garden-inspired outdoor venue that gives people the freedom to bring their own ideas, vendors, traditions, and celebrations to life. That flexibility is a big part of who we are. Luna Gardens is not meant to dictate what an event should be; it’s meant to provide the backdrop for something meaningful and beautiful.
Today, Luna Gardens is an outdoor venue created for weddings, private events, concerts, festivals, corporate gatherings, and community celebrations. What makes me most proud is seeing how the space changes with every event. One day it may be romantic and intimate, another day lively and energetic. Each gathering brings something new to the gardens. In the future Luna Gardens will grow, add more gardens, and eventually be a spectacular botanical garden for all in the public to enjoy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest struggles has been building the infrastructure needed to support the vision. Luna Gardens is a large scale outdoor venue, and creating that from the ground up has meant dealing with irrigation, electrical, audio, the 1-acre lake, stages, buildings, landscaping, and many other behind-the-scenes details that guests may not see but are essential to the experience.
The vision has always been larger than the budget, so we’ve had to be patient, creative, and willing to build in phases. There have been times when I wished things could move faster, but every improvement has had to be carefully prioritized. When you are developing land and creating a garden-based venue, progress takes time, and nature has its own timeline, too.
The challenges have been time-consuming and expensive, but they have also made Luna Gardens more intentional. Nothing about the space is cookie-cutter. It has been built piece by piece, with a lot of thought, persistence, and faith in the bigger picture. Every struggle has become part of the story, and every step forward makes the vision feel more real.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Luna Gardens is a garden-inspired outdoor event venue in Lockhart, created for people who want a celebration that feels personal, natural, and different from a traditional indoor venue.
At its heart, Luna Gardens is a place to gather. We host weddings, private celebrations, concerts, festivals, corporate events, community gatherings, and other special occasions. What we specialize in is providing a beautiful, flexible outdoor setting where people can bring their own vision to life. Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all event package, we focus on creating the atmosphere and foundation in the gardens, open space, pond, stages, and natural surroundings so each event can have its own personality.
I think what sets Luna Gardens apart is that it was created from a very personal place. It did not begin as a commercial concept copied from another venue. It grew out of my lifelong love for gardening and my desire to build something unique that could be shared with others. Because of that, the property has a different feeling. It is not sterile or overly polished in a way that removes the character. It is alive, evolving, and connected to nature.
We are known for being a venue that gives people freedom. Every couple, family, organization, or planner has a different idea of what their event should feel like, and we want to support that. Luna Gardens is a canvas, not a template. Clients can bring in the vendors, design elements, music, food, and traditions that matter to them. That flexibility allows each event to feel authentic rather than manufactured.
Brand-wise, we are most proud that Luna Gardens feels genuine. The brand is rooted in beauty, creativity, openness, and connection. I wanted to create a space where people could feel inspired the moment they arrived. Where the natural setting does a lot of the work, but still leaves room for imagination. Whether someone is planning a romantic wedding, a lively concert, a milestone celebration, or a corporate gathering, the goal is for the space to feel welcoming and memorable.
What I want readers to know is that Luna Gardens is still growing, and that is part of its charm. Gardens take time. Building a venue with this kind of vision takes time. Every improvement, every planting, every event, and every person who comes through the gates becomes part of the story.
More than anything, Luna Gardens is about creating a place where people can celebrate in a way that feels beautiful, personal, and truly their own.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice is: don’t give up.
Building something from the ground up almost always takes more time and more money than you expect. There will be delays, unexpected costs, and moments where the vision feels bigger than what you can manage in that moment. But if you believe in what you are creating, you have to keep moving forward, even if it is one step at a time.
I also wish I had understood earlier how important it is to start marketing before everything feels finished. It is tempting to wait until everything is perfect, but people connect with the journey. Sharing the process helps build awareness and gives people a reason to follow along and become invested in what you are creating.
I would also encourage anyone starting out to study their competition and understand what sets them apart. You need to know what else is out there, what people are looking for, and why someone would choose you. For Luna Gardens, that means focusing on our flexibility, our garden-inspired setting, and the fact that the space feels personal, natural, and unique.
The biggest lesson is that persistence matters. Stay clear on your vision, be realistic about the investment, and keep going.
