Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Valkner.
Hi Erin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always loved photography, but didn’t start professionally until 2015 when my son was a toddler. I had been working in the field of social work for years and was completely burnt out. After becoming a mom, I had that “now or never” moment, where I realized if I didn’t go for it, I’d regret not becoming a photographer. So I did! I dove head first into learning everything I could about lighting, posing and business. I started out part time while my son was little, and it has grown over the years to become full time. I cannot believe I waited so long to get started!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely not all been smooth! The business side of things seems to always have its ups and downs. I moved back to Texas from Montana two years into my professional photography journey, so I had to start over then. There’s always more to learn and being able to adjust as needed has kept me going. I feel like the photography side of things has been smoother, but I’m always learning and growing. I love trying new techniques and pushing myself to grow artistically.
As you know, we’re big fans of Erin Valkner Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m a headshot, portrait and boudoir photographer, helping women transform the way they see themselves and how they show up – in life, in business. My goal with every photoshoot, whether it’s a branding session, a portrait session or a boudoir session, is to carve out a space where women can be unapologetically themselves and allow them to show up fully in their lives. I’m here to help women realize their own innate confidence, strength and beauty. Every person has a story worth sharing and our uniqueness is where our beauty comes from. I want everyone to experience and celebrate that feeling of confidence that comes with showing up and being seen as you are.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was so painfully shy as a kid! Part of the reason I put off going for being a photographer for so long was because I was afraid to talk to people I didn’t know. I’ve always on the quiet and reserved side and am a natural observer. I prefer deeper one on one converstations vs being in a crowd. It’s helped me in photography to be able to connect with whoever is sitting in front of my camera and capture who they really are.
