Exploring Life & Business with Hannah Milford of Happy Camper Counseling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Milford.

Hi Hannah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Happy Camper Counseling is a mental health therapy office operating out of a fully restored 1966 Airstream trailer. I’m Hannah Milford, a Licensed Professional Counselor and founder of Happy Camper Counseling.

Our story began in 2013, when an unconventional dream came to life inside a vintage camper at the “Y” in Oak Hill. Guided by a passion for helping others and a creative vision of what a counseling space could be, I set out to build a practice where therapy felt as authentic and inspiring as the healing journey itself.

For seven years, we welcomed children, teens, and adults into our cozy vintage space, helping them navigate life’s challenges in an environment designed for comfort and genuine connection.

Like many of us, when the pandemic hit, it required a big pivot. We had to close the doors to our Airstream office, a space filled with so many memories! We put our beloved camper into storage and shifted our practice entirely online.

Around the same time, my own life was shifting in beautiful ways. I welcomed my two children and stepped back from a full caseload twice for maternity leave. While I continued seeing clients virtually, being truly present for those precious early years was so important. It was a time of deep reflection, both personally and for the future of Happy Camper Counseling.

Just because things were quieter on the surface didn’t mean the Happy Camper spirit wasn’t dreaming and building! My passion for creating unique healing spaces kicked into high gear. We actually added two more vintage beauties to the future Happy Camper fleet, another classic Airstream, a ’77 this time, and a truly special ‘55 Spartan trailer. I’ve been pouring my heart (and a lot of paint!) into transforming the Spartan into the most fun, colorful, and creative play therapy office imaginable!

And then came the biggest leap… finding the perfect spot to reopen. We found an incredible hidden gem, a whole acre near Lakeway, with its own serene creek and private waterfall! We’ve lovingly named it the “Happy Camper Nature Preserve.” It felt instantly magical, and we knew it was the perfect place to build our new home.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to our new location has been anything but smooth—literally and figuratively. When we first found the property, it sat off an unpaved road that had become a magnet for illegal dumping and neglect. But beneath all that roughness, I saw potential and the quiet beauty worth protecting.

That vision turned into action. I launched a grassroots effort, spoke at Travis County meetings, and watched our neighbors rally behind the cause. Even KXAN picked up the story! In the end, our voices made a difference, and the road was officially included in the county’s paving bond passed in November 2023.

What started as a challenge became a community victory and a reminder that meaningful change often begins with one bumpy road.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Happy Camper Counseling, we support individuals, children, and teens through a wide range of challenges, whether it’s anxiety, depression, life transitions, trauma, or self-esteem.

Our toolkit is as diverse as our clients: talk therapy, play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, sandtray therapy, group sessions, parent coaching, nature-based therapy, social-emotional education, and secure telehealth.

What sets us apart is our belief that every healing journey is unique. Clients tell us they appreciate our welcoming, indivi

What are your plans for the future?
We can’t wait to reopen in 2026 at the Happy Camper Nature Preserve, our new nature-inspired therapy space near Lakeway. The new site will feature our original ’66 and 77 Airstream offices, plus a beautifully restored ’55 Spartan trailer designed especially for child play therapy.

Blending creativity, nature, and heart, this space will offer a fresh, welcoming experience for clients of all ages. Our goal is to grow, expand services, and continue supporting the community in ways that bring connection, care, and a little bit of magic to the therapy experience.
