Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime Salcedo.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started in Brooklyn, New York, where I grew up understanding the value of hard work, resilience, and creating opportunities for yourself. I’ve spent over 15 years as a tattoo artist, eight years working in emergency medical services, and nearly a decade serving as a New York City firefighter. Each of those experiences shaped my perspective on people, business, and the importance of solving real problems.
While working in the tattoo industry, I noticed a recurring issue: people wanted a more comfortable experience, but many of the available products didn’t align with what I believed consumers were increasingly looking for. That observation eventually led me to create Painless Picasso, a plant-based personal care brand focused on improving comfort during tattoos, waxing, laser treatments, and other cosmetic procedures.
What started as an idea from a tattoo artist has evolved into a growing consumer brand selling nationwide through e-commerce, Amazon, and professional partnerships. Along the way, we’ve participated in startup accelerator programs, connected with major retailers, and begun laying the groundwork for international expansion.
Building a company while working as a firefighter and tattoo artist hasn’t been easy. I’ve had to learn everything from product development and manufacturing to fundraising, marketing, and navigating the challenges of scaling a business. There have been plenty of setbacks, but each one has taught me something valuable.
Today, my vision is much bigger than tattoos. I’m building Painless Picasso into a recognizable global brand in the plant-based comfort and personal care space, with ambitions to compete alongside established household names.
At the heart of it all, I’m still the same kid from Brooklyn who believes that your circumstances don’t have to determine your ceiling. You don’t need to come from money or have the perfect connections to build something meaningful. You just need the willingness to start, the discipline to keep going, and the courage to think big.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. Entrepreneurship has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. From navigating financial obstacles and learning industries I had no prior experience in, to balancing my responsibilities as a firefighter, tattoo artist, father, and business owner, it’s been a constant learning process.
There have been moments of uncertainty, setbacks, and plenty of lessons learned the hard way. Building something from the ground up requires sacrifice, patience, and a willingness to adapt. I’ve learned that resilience isn’t about avoiding failure; it’s about continuing to show up, especially when things aren’t going your way. Every challenge has helped shape both the entrepreneur and the person I’m becoming.
As you know, we’re big fans of Painless Picasso Co.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Painless Picasso was born from a pretty simple idea: getting a tattoo shouldn’t have to feel like your skin is being cheese grated.
We’re a plant-based personal care brand creating innovative comfort products for tattoos, waxing, laser treatments, and other cosmetic procedures. Think of us as the brand making uncomfortable experiences a little more comfortable,
What sets us apart? We’re not a company that studied the tattoo industry from a boardroom. We’re building this brand from firsthand experience, combining over 15 years of tattooing with a passion for innovation and plant-based alternatives.
What I’m most proud of is that we’ve taken an idea born in a tattoo studio and turned it into a growing brand reaching customers across the country.
And we’re just getting started. Our vision goes far beyond tattoos. We want Painless Picasso to become a household name next to products like IcyHot and Tylenol.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Start small, stay consistent, and listen closely to your customers. I wish I’d known earlier that progress takes time, focus on building something genuinely useful, learn from feedback, and keep improving.
