Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Miller.
Hi Jordan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello! I really appreciate the opportunity. So, I’ve always been an active person, playing most sports when I was younger but really focusing on soccer. This led me to playing 4 years in college which was a great experience. I have always been a smaller guy, so when I was in high school, my good friend David Strauss encouraged me to lift weights to put on some size so I wouldn’t get pushed around as much, and the rest was history. It truly became a part of my life. I have probably worked out 5-6 times a week for the past 15 or so years. I haven’t really understood how much it has impacted my life till recently. I had no idea that bench pressing and doing curls (which was basically all we did back in high school) would lead me to a career helping people through health & Fitness!
Fast forward some years and I am now a college graduate (Bachelors in Exercise Science & Human Performance) with a great job in Houston working for a company that disposed of the harmful gases that were created in tank fields, refineries, and pipelines. I was making fantastic money for being right out of college, but the job left me very unfulfilled. I would sit in a truck 18 days in a row for 14 hours a day, with 2 days off, basically doing nothing. I barely saw my family or friends, never had time to do anything for myself, and it was hard to stay on track with my fitness. I literally heard multiple people say “say goodbye to your social life, say goodbye to your family life, but the money is great!” I would cringe every time they said that. I just wanted to be happy, help people, and hopefully make a decent living. Some of my old college friends jokingly said “you should quit your job and move up here to Austin ” and one day I was like “Why not?.” After being at the job for less than a year, I decided to quit, move to Austin, and pursue becoming a personal trainer. It was the best decision I have ever made!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Deciding to quit my job and move to Austin. That was a really hard process. If you asked any person if I should quit my great job with benefits, move to another city with no job lined up, and follow my dreams (helping people change their lives through fitness) they would probably say I was crazy. Even I thought I was a little crazy. Being so young I had no idea if I was making the right decision. I even had to watch motivational videos on YouTube to hype myself up to go through with it. It was probably the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make. What if I moved and couldn’t find a job? Ran out of money? What if I made the wrong decision? What would my parents think of me? Shocker, they weren’t very happy about the decision, as they should have been. They made me buy the car from them that they had given me. I paid half of it with cash and took out a loan for the other half in case I needed that money to support myself once I moved. I ultimately think that was good thing because it made me grow up a little bit and realize the severity of my decision.
As you know, we’re big fans of Humble But Hungry Fitness. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Humble But Hungry Fitness is my very own personal training business. It is just me training out of my garage gym that I recently created. I specialize in strength and functional fitness but can help anyone reach any goal. That was the benefit of working for golds gym for 5 years, I’ve been exposed to so many different people, learning how to help each one of them individually. What sets me apart is that I genuinely want to help you better your life, and I want to help you do it in a fun and interesting way! When I was sitting in a truck at my old job, I kept repeating to myself “I want to help people change their lives” and it is still something I tell myself every day.
I honestly love having Humble but Hungry Fitness as my company name because this is exactly what I strive for, and what I encourage my clients to follow as well! Being humble means that you don’t flash your accomplishments or progress every day, you don’t fish for compliments, you don’t post shirtless selfies flexing on Instagram, and you don’t post how early you are waking up to work out. Being humble means you quietly put in the hard work when no one is looking, you stay consistent, and you let people notice your accomplishments and progress for you. Staying hungry means that when you hit your goals, you make new ones, whether that is in fitness or life. It means you are always striving to be better, learn more, and lift others up alongside you. Working hard at your fitness and health can have tremendous benefits in every part of your life, and that’s what I am here for, to guide you through that.
In terms of services, I do 1-on-1 training, group training, virtual training, which all come with extra workouts to do on your own, and I have the cheaper option of sending you workouts to do by yourself weekly in case you can’t afford 1-on-1 training or feel as though it’s not necessary.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I always talk about how I’m not very handy with tools, yet that first job I had out of college was the epitome of being handy and working with tools. I definitely learned a lot. Although the first couple weeks on the job I felt like a fish out of water. Also, I would have to wear a full fire-retardant jumpsuit, hard hat, and various monitors to let me know if there were any gases around that could kill me. I was basically around stuff all day that could potentially kill or injure me. It is the complete opposite of what I am doing now and I am so thankful for that.
Secondly, (and this could have definitely gone under the challenges I’ve faced section) when ever I found out that I had gotten the job at Gold’s Gym, I had $10 in my account, and was living off of tortillas, refried beans, cheese, and hot sauce for every meal. Whatever you want to call that, perfect timing, a coincidence, divine intervention, or just plain luck, I’m thankful that I got the job when I did. Those days were the good ‘ol days that I never want to go through again.
