Exploring Life & Business with Kaylyn Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylyn Harris.

Hi Kaylyn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Houston with my parents and three older brothers. I was very active in sports growing up and I worked hard in school. I always had a passion for learning and trying new things (though I admit, most of the things I tried I wasn’t too interested in turning into dedicated hobbies). I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin (Hook ’em!) in 2012 with a B.S in Architectural Engineering. After graduation, I went straight into the professional engineering world, working 8-5 while trying to balance all the new responsibilities of real adulthood.

While in my early to mid-twenties, it seemed like every day I was tired or I had allergies or a headache. Eventually, I became sick and tired of feeling sick and tired and I started prioritizing my health. I spent a lot of time and effort figuring out what my bio-individual needs were in order to live a happy and healthy life. For me, stress management and day-to-day flexibility became apparent ‘musts’ in my life. This passion for understanding what defined ‘well being’ led me to leave the corporate world in 2019 in order to 1) share this passion with others and 2) give myself the freedom to create flexibility in my life.

Even though I left the corporate world in 2019, I wasn’t ready to leave the professional world. I graduated from the Institute for Integrated Nutrition in 2020 and I decided to start two companies. The first, Fenner Energy Consultants, is an Engineering firm which focuses on building energy modeling, HVAC design, and building mechanical system commissioning. The second company is Sennergy Health Training which I started with my husband, Steven Harris. Sennergy is a personal training and health coaching business which provides individualized programs for clients. These two companies couldn’t be more different and I love it!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge I faced was my own fear and insecurities of not knowing enough. This is still an obstacle I face but it gets easier to navigate each day. I continue to surround myself with mentors and to approach each new problem with an inquisitive beginner’s mind.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Fenner Energy Consultants and Sennergy Health Training?
Fenner Energy Consultants provides clients with various mechanical engineering services including HVAC duct and piping system design, Mechanical load calculations and building energy modeling, LEED documentation, and building systems commissioning.

Sennergy Health Training provides clients with individualized workout programs and health coaching. At Sennergy we look at health from a big picture perspective. We understand there is a complex relationship between what nourishes us on and off the plate. We explore the role that factors such as environment, relationships, social life, and stress have on our ability to make healthy choices and effect lasting lifestyle changes.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
You don’t have to have it all figured out before you start. Just start! Once you ramp things up, you’ll likely decide you want to change your mission statement or you’ll have a new idea for a target market and maybe you’ll want to change your branding to match your new vision or whatnot. Your ideas will grow and change so there’s no point in nailing down 100% of these ideas into your business or venture before you start. Just start and let yourself be flexible.
