Exploring Life & Business with Kristin Scott of Spitfire Girl, LLC / Atum Fragrance, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Scott.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
Spitfire Girl was born in 2011. I was a newly single mom and needed to find a way to support my two kids. I was a full-time Mom and a fine artist with several groups and solo shows. The fine art world is tough, and the money is never consistent, which is what you need to support two lovely kiddos. Spitfire Girl started with something I called a “Box Card.” They were mini dioramas, and kids loved them. They were a huge hit! I branched into greeting cards, notebooks, plush, etc. In 2007 I met my husband, Jason Schroder (AKA Mr. Incognito), an established tattoo artist and visual artist. When we met, there was immediate love and an artistic connection. We designed a product on the first date we sold it to Urban Outfitters. From there on, we have managed to grow the brand to include candles, jewelry, fragrance, and ceramics. I am a native Texan, and in 2017, it was time to come home and be closer to my family. So we packed it all up and moved to Dripping Springs, where we have continued to grow the brand and create, create, create.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest obstacle to growing our brand was access to funds. Spitfire Girl has always been 100% self-funded; Being a single Mom and running a brand was tough. The company did not make a profit for almost ten years. But we believed in our brand and message, so it was head down and get to work. We would always somehow manage to pull it all off. Creating a brand takes 100% of you all the time, every day. If you truly believe in what you are doing, it’s not working. This is our passion! We love to create. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing your vision realized and then seeing how people react to all that hard work. It is highly addictive.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a gift, home decor, and lifestyle brand located in Austin.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I was a child athlete. The mentorship I gained from that experience has formed who I am today. The grit and hard work ethic that athletes, at a high level, must exhibit can transform you as a person. You are taught that there is no such thing as failure. Each missed step is a learning experience, a chance to learn something new about who you are and what you are capable of.
