Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Young
Hi Lisa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I moved to South Austin 32 years ago with two preschool boys in the backseat. Since then, all three of us have graduated from UT Austin. I’m one of those people you see in college who’s ten years older than everyone else, having put the degree on hold when I had my first child. But now I’m a triple-horn with three degrees from UT. As a family, volunteering has always been a big part of our lives. I found that nonprofit work is what fulfills me the most. Since 2023, I’ve been the Executive Director of the Hays County Food Bank and it has been an exhilarating experience. It’s a very exciting time for the food bank – this past year, we’ve acquired a new facility and starting meaningful new programs.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always struggles and opportunities. It wasn’t easy managing work and school while also raising two kids. Money and time were both tight. But it was even more important to succeed when I had two children watching me as their example. I’m first generation in my family to graduate from college, and I hope that it was easier for the generation after me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Hays County Food Bank ?
The food bank has been serving Hays County since 1984. We’re a nonprofit that provides food assistance every week to people who need help with groceries. In 2024 we’ve distributed 1.5 million pounds of food. The food bank serves everyday working families as well as unhoused individuals. We rely largely on donors and volunteers, but the most amazing thing about the food bank is the staff. They’re a determined group who do everything possible to get food on the table for thousands of people.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The power of showing up! Take every opportunity, attend every event you can to advocate for yourself and your organization. Some will be a dud, but it’s still an opportunity to practice your skills.
