Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Sims.
Hi Mia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Mia Sims didn’t just grow into the world of events—she was shaped by it long before she ever knew it would become her life’s work.
Born on June 2 in Buffalo, New York, Mia is the oldest of four brothers—a role that naturally positioned her as both leader and observer from an early age. Her childhood was anything but stationary. Over the years, her family would call nine different states home, a journey that might suggest military roots to some. In reality, it was her father’s career in the food industry that kept the family on the move, exposing Mia to a wide range of environments, cultures, and experiences across the country.
Frequent relocation had its challenges, but it also created a tightly bonded family unit. Mia and her brothers spent countless hours immersed in imagination—watching movies and acting out their own creative storylines. Yet even in those playful moments, Mia was doing something more: she was observing. Watching. Learning. Her attention often drifted beyond the games and toward her parents, quietly absorbing the rhythms of their world.
Her father’s work offered Mia an early, behind-the-scenes look at hospitality—how spaces come together, how people are served, and how experiences are created. At the same time, her mother was crafting her own kind of magic at home. Known for hosting gatherings that people genuinely looked forward to, she created environments filled with warmth, intention, and connection. Together, her parents unknowingly laid the foundation for what would later become Mia’s signature approach to events: equal parts strategy, service, and soul.
Driven, curious, and naturally self-motivated, Mia found herself drawn to the details that most people overlook—the flow of a room, the timing of a moment, the feeling an experience leaves behind. That instinct sharpened during her time with the Urban League in Austin, where she was given the opportunity to plan and execute an event that, notably, still exists today.
That moment wasn’t just a task—it was a turning point.
It sparked the creation of Mia the Event Diva, the boutique event planning firm that would go on to define her career. From there, her entrepreneurial spirit expanded into additional ventures, including AUSTINTACIOUS and The Gift Bag—each one rooted in the same philosophy she learned growing up: that meaningful experiences don’t happen by accident, they’re designed with intention.
Today, Mia Sims stands as a testament to the power of early influence, lived experience, and an unwavering eye for detail—proof that sometimes, the seeds of your future are planted long before you ever recognize them.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the early days, she was everything: HR, finance, marketing, operations—the entire team wrapped into one. The weight of wearing every hat could feel overwhelming, forcing her to make tough decisions about where to focus her time and energy. “You have to be clear about what truly moves the needle,” she reflects. “And then, when you can, you bring in support.”
Resources weren’t always abundant. There were moments when Mia didn’t have what she thought she needed to move forward. But instead of standing still, she kept going. Each step—no matter how uncertain—created momentum. “Sometimes you can’t see what’s next until you make a move,” she says. “It required faith. Every step unlocked the next opportunity.”
And then there was cash flow—the ever-present reality of entrepreneurship. “It’s called ‘flow’ for a reason,” she notes. “It comes in, and it goes out. And sometimes, that ‘out’ feels heavier than the ‘in.’” Navigating those fluctuations required discipline, resilience, and a mindset rooted in long-term sustainability.
Mistakes were inevitable, but Mia chose to see them differently. Rather than setbacks, they became stepping stones. “You have to fail forward,” she says. “You’ll get things wrong—but if you’re paying attention, those moments will refine you.”
One of the most important lessons she’s carried with her is the value of preparation—especially during seasons of success. “When things are flowing well, that’s the time to be intentional about saving,” she shares. “Because there will be lean moments. And having that cushion allows you to keep going without panic.”
Through it all, Mia’s journey reflects a truth many entrepreneurs come to know: success isn’t built in perfect conditions—it’s built in the willingness to keep moving, even when the path isn’t fully clear.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mia the Event Diva?
For Mia Sims, event planning is never just about the event—it’s about the outcome it creates.
As the founder of Mia the Event Diva, a boutique, full-service event planning firm, Mia has built her brand on a philosophy that goes beyond aesthetics. Her work lives at the intersection of strategy, storytelling, and experience—where every detail is designed with intention and every moment serves a purpose.
From corporate celebrations to nonprofit fundraisers and community-driven experiences, Mia approaches each event as a custom creation. There are no templates, no one-size-fits-all solutions—only thoughtfully curated experiences that reflect the goals, values, and vision of each client. “We’re not just planning events,” she often says. “We’re designing outcomes.”
That mindset is what sets her apart. As an experienced event strategist, Mia takes a deep dive into the “why” behind every gathering—aligning each element with an organization’s mission, messaging, and measurable goals. The result is not only a seamless experience for guests, but one that resonates long after the event ends.
Her clients don’t just hire a planner—they gain a partner. Throughout the process, Mia and her team operate as an extension of the organization itself, a “surrogate staff member” fully invested in both the details and the bigger picture. It’s a level of collaboration that builds trust and consistently delivers results.
With a robust network of trusted local and national vendors, Mia the Event Diva is known for producing polished, high-quality events with ease. But it’s within the nonprofit space where her expertise truly shines. Mia brings a distinct advantage to fundraising events—she doesn’t just think like an event planner, she thinks like a development professional. That dual perspective allows her to design experiences that are not only beautifully executed, but strategically built to engage donors, tell compelling stories, and drive meaningful revenue.
At its core, the mission remains simple: create events that feel effortless for the client, unforgettable for the guest, and impactful for the organization. Because for Mia Sims, success isn’t measured by how an event looks—it’s measured by what it does.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, Mia Sims shows no signs of slowing down—only evolving.
While she remains committed to growing and enhancing Mia the Event Diva, her vision for the future extends beyond producing exceptional events. Mia has developed a deep passion for facilitating adult learning, coaching, and creating spaces where knowledge is not only shared, but truly absorbed and applied.
Over the years, she has stepped into the role of educator, coach, and mentor—sharing her insights and expertise at conferences, workshops, and industry gatherings. Through these experiences, she empowers others—particularly nonprofit professionals and event planners—to think more strategically, plan more intentionally, and ultimately create events that are both meaningful and impactful.
Her coaching work offers a more personalized layer of impact, giving individuals and teams the opportunity to refine their approach, strengthen their strategy, and gain clarity around how to design events that truly deliver results. It’s hands-on, insightful, and rooted in real-world experience.
For Mia, it’s a natural extension of her work. It’s not just about what she can create—it’s about what she can teach and guide others to create for themselves. And as she continues to expand her reach, one thing is clear: her influence will be felt not only in the events she produces, but in the people she inspires along the way.
