Today we’d like to introduce you to Phil Tran.
Hi Phil, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story starts with my daughter, Maia — the inspiration and namesake behind Maisaic. Becoming her father changed everything for me: my values, my priorities, the story I want to tell and the legacy I want to leave behind.
Before starting Maisaic, I spent 10+ years in the restaurant industry and another 10+ years in B2B tech. When I found myself at a crossroads as a newly single parent, I knew I wanted to do something different — something more meaningful that could also give me and Maia the freedom and future I envisioned for us.
So I did some soul searching, contemplated various business ideas and problems I might be able to solve — and naturally, I kept thinking of things that were keeping me up at night — finding a good chiropractor after throwing out my back picking up her toys. Researching the best options for childcare and extracurricular activities. Locating a trustworthy attorney for my pending custody battle. Every time I needed a service provider, it felt like I was on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire — burning through lifelines just to make a basic decision. Phone a friend, family member or coworker, ask the audience on Facebook and Nextdoor, or 50:50 chance by scrolling through Yelp and Google reviews and hoping for the best.
I came to the realization that providers are the heart of every service experience — the reason clients return, refer friends, and stay loyal. Yet everything is centered around the businesses. There’s very little support and resources for providers to build and grow their personal brand, reputation and clientele. LinkedIn works for corporate professionals, not service providers. A five-star review that mentions someone’s name doesn’t follow them when they move on. Social media puts the burden on providers to become content creators just to stay visible. And the countless booking platforms and service aggregators out there are built around businesses, not people — charging both sides while solving neither’s real problems.
That’s why I built Maisaic — a services community built around people, not just places.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely been a bumpy road. As a solo founder, fully bootstrapped, introducing a new concept while trying to grow a two-sided marketplace — there are days it feels like the cards are stacked against me. The hardest part isn’t any single obstacle; it’s the relentlessness of it. There’s no team to pick up the slack, no outside funding as a safety net, and no guarantee that something this new and different will find its footing.
There have been moments where I had to make a choice between pushing harder on the business and being present for Maia. That tension never fully goes away. But I’ve learned to treat those small recalibrations as wins in themselves — because showing up for Maia while building something I truly believe in is exactly why I started this journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Maisaic, Inc. ?
Maisaic is a free, people-first platform where service providers of any kind can create a profile, list their services, collect endorsements and reviews, share updates, and connect with new and existing clients. And for consumers, it’s one place to search, save, share, and compare service providers so they can make confident and informed decisions.
The four values at the core of the company are the same ones I try to live by and pass on to Maia: be accessible and inclusive, be honest and transparent, strive for balance, and be bold enough to try new things. They’re not just words on our website — they shaped every decision about how the platform works and who it’s built for.
I’d love to share some of my favorite service providers and how they’re using Maisaic:
Esther is a hairstylist of 15 years, working at various Supercuts and Sport Clips locations around Austin. She’s earned countless five-star reviews over the years — but those reviews are scattered across each location and they don’t really belong to her. Now that she’s taking time off to be a stay-at-home mom, she’s faced with the concern of having to rebuild her reputation if she ever returns to the craft. She set up her Maisaic profile so her existing clients can find and follow her, and we’re working to pull in her existing reviews so her reputation is ready to go wherever she decides to take it next. Follow her profile to see where she goes next. maisaic.com/esther
Jay is a certified personal trainer at FastFit in Tarrytown — a recent career change from being a sushi chef and restauranteur for 20 years. He’s using Maisaic to show his dedication to clients is top tier — whether he’s serving up food or fitness lessons. Check him out and book a free introductory session. maisaic.com/jay_tanaka
Blanca has provided residential and commercial cleaning services in Round Rock and surrounding areas for over 15 years — growing her clientele almost entirely through word of mouth. She recently lost a major office client due to a business closure and needs to fill the spot. She’s asking her existing clients to drop her a review on Maisaic so she can show prospective clients why she’s the best in the business. Read her reviews and get an estimate for your home or office. maisaic.com/blanca
Ashley’s been in real estate for four years, helping families buy, sell, and rent homes throughout Austin. She’s now focused on new home sales with D.R. Horton in San Marcos. She’s using Maisaic to share and grow her reputation and clientele to whichever neighborhood her career takes her next. Follow her if you’re in the market now or might be in the future. maisaic.com/athomewithashley
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risk-taking is in my blood — literally. My parents risked everything to escape Vietnam after the war to give us a better life. That kind of courage leaves a mark and it shaped how I move through the world.
Following their example, I’ve taken my share of leaps. I went back to school in my mid-20s. I’ve walked away from successful careers twice when I knew it was time for something new. I’ve moved cross-country four times for greater opportunities. None of those felt reckless — they felt necessary.
I’m also an avid blackjack and poker player, and I think about risk the same way at the table: understand the basic strategy, calculate the odds in your head, and then trust your gut. You’re never going to be 100% sure if you’re right, but at some point you have to make your move.
Starting Maisaic was no different.
Pricing:
- Maisaic profiles are free — and they always will be. Making the platform accessible to any provider across any service category is a core part of our mission, and that doesn’t work if there’s a paywall in the way.
- We’re an open platform, meaning providers can link directly to their social media, website, booking pages, email, and phone — we’re not trying to trap anyone inside our ecosystem. Our growth model is built on value-added tools and services designed to help providers grow their brand and clientele, not on charging them just to be found.
- We’re also deeply community-driven. User feedback shapes what we build next, so we encourage everyone to try it out and let us know what you think.
