The Wild Thorn Collective began with a vision to create something that felt different from a traditional booth-rental salon. Our founder, Natalia Gonzalez, saw how many independent stylists were expected to build their careers and businesses entirely on their own. She wanted to create the type of environment she wished she had experienced earlier in her own career: one where stylists could remain independent without feeling isolated.
That vision became a reality when The Wild Thorn Collective opened in Killeen in November 2025. From the beginning, our purpose has been to provide more than a beautiful place to work. We wanted to build a creative community centered around collaboration, continued education, mentorship, and genuine support.
Each stylist at The Wild Thorn Collective operates an independent business, but they also have a team behind them. We encourage our artists to exchange knowledge, create content together, celebrate one another’s accomplishments, and continue developing both creatively and professionally. We believe there is room for everyone to succeed and that growth does not have to come at someone else’s expense.
Since opening, we have watched our stylists gain confidence, strengthen their businesses, form meaningful connections, and take important steps toward the careers they envision for themselves. The salon has also grown into a space where clients can feel welcomed, understood, and connected with artists who are passionate about their craft.
Today, The Wild Thorn Collective is still growing and evolving. We are expanding our focus on education, mentorship, community events, and opportunities that support both our team and other local small businesses. What started as an idea for a different kind of salon has become a community of artists building their individual dreams alongside one another.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a completely smooth road. Opening a salon requires much more than creating a beautiful space. We had to build the business, establish our systems, grow our visibility, and create a healthy team culture, all while continuing to serve clients and manage the everyday responsibilities that come with operating a new business.
One of our biggest challenges has been finding the right people who truly understand our vision. The Wild Thorn Collective is not simply a place to rent a chair. We are intentional about creating an environment built on collaboration, education, accountability, and mutual support. Building that type of culture takes time, and we have learned that growth is not only about filling every available station. It is about protecting the atmosphere we are creating and welcoming artists whose values align with ours.
We have also had to navigate the financial realities of opening and growing a small business. There are constant expenses, unexpected repairs, and responsibilities behind the scenes that clients may never see. Learning how to balance those demands while continuing to invest in our stylists, our clients, and the salon’s future has required flexibility and resilience.
Another challenge has been encouraging newer stylists to believe in themselves during a time when building a clientele can feel overwhelming. Social media often makes success appear immediate, but creating a sustainable career requires consistency, patience, education, and the willingness to keep showing up. Supporting our artists through that process has reinforced why The Wild Thorn Collective was created in the first place.
Every challenge has helped us become more intentional about our standards, systems, and direction. We are still learning and evolving, but the difficult moments have strengthened our commitment to building a salon where independent artists can grow without having to navigate every part of the journey alone.
