Hidden Gems: Meet Ben Webster of Wimberley Inn + Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Webster.

Hi Ben, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hospitality has honestly been the thread running through most of my adult life. I moved to San Marcos at 19 to attend Texas State University, where I studied Mass Communications with a focus in Advertising and a minor in Psychology, but I quickly realized I was most energized by people-facing work and creating experiences. My first major step into hospitality was through the Disney College Program at Walt Disney World, where I worked in Attractions and later in Park Operations at Magic Kingdom. Disney taught me that hospitality is really about creating moments — making people feel welcomed, cared for, and like they’re part of something memorable, even in small interactions.

After Disney, I joined the opening team at the JW Marriott Austin as a Night Auditor, eventually moving into Concierge work where I got to focus more directly on guest experiences. From there, I was recruited by a startup hospitality company in Austin called The Guild, where I helped grow the guest experience department from a tiny operation into a large-scale boutique hotel company. Being part of that growth taught me everything from operations and team building to branding, systems, and how thoughtful hospitality can shape the entire feel of a place.

After the pandemic, I found my way to Wimberley Inn + Bar, which felt like the perfect blend of everything I love about hospitality. It has the warmth and personality of a small-town roadside inn, but with opportunities to create elevated experiences, community events, food and beverage programming, and memorable stays for travelers exploring the Texas Hill Country. As Innkeeper, I wear a lot of hats — from guest services and operations to marketing and creative direction — but at the heart of it, the goal is simple: create a place that feels welcoming, relaxing, and genuinely memorable for every guest who comes through.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but honestly, I think that’s true for most people in hospitality. A lot of this industry is learning how to adapt quickly, stay calm under pressure, and figure things out in real time. Early in my career, I worked overnight shifts, long holidays, and high-pressure guest-facing roles that taught me resilience pretty quickly. Working in hotels means you’re constantly balancing operations, guest expectations, staffing, maintenance issues, budgets, and unpredictable situations — all while still creating a welcoming experience for guests.

One of the biggest challenges was navigating hospitality through the pandemic era. I had previously helped scale a startup hospitality company during a period of rapid growth, and then suddenly the industry was forced to rethink almost everything overnight. It really highlighted how important flexibility and creativity are in this business. At Wimberley Inn + Bar, some of the ongoing challenges are the same ones many independent hospitality businesses face — staffing, rising costs, maintaining consistency, and wearing a lot of hats at once. On any given day, I might move from handling guest concerns to troubleshooting technology, helping with marketing, coordinating maintenance, or jumping in wherever the team needs support.

That said, those challenges are also part of what keeps hospitality rewarding for me. I genuinely enjoy creating environments where people can slow down, connect, celebrate, and make memories. Seeing guests return year after year, celebrate milestones with us, or tell us how much they loved their stay makes the hard days worth it.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Wimberley Inn + Bar is a boutique roadside inn in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, just minutes from the Wimberley Square. We have 21 thoughtfully designed rooms, a large shaded pool, and an on-site bar and kitchen with a weekend brunch program that has become a gathering place for both travelers and locals alike. What we strive to create is something relaxed, approachable, and authentically rooted in Wimberley — a place where guests can slow down, unplug a little, and enjoy the atmosphere as much as the destination itself.

What sets us apart is that mix of a nostalgic roadside motel with a more elevated boutique hotel experience. We’re not trying to feel overly formal or overly trendy — we want guests to feel genuinely comfortable here. Whether someone is visiting for a romantic weekend, a getaway with friends, a wedding, or simply stopping in for brunch and cocktails, our goal is to create an experience that feels warm, memorable, and personal.

One thing I’m especially proud of is how much we’ve leaned into creating a true sense of place. The property reflects the Texas Hill Country in a way that feels modern but still unpretentious — shaded oak trees, outdoor gathering spaces, live music, pool days, craft cocktails, brunch, and spaces designed for connection and relaxation. We’ve worked hard to build a brand that feels cohesive while still remaining welcoming and approachable.

I also think being an independent property allows us to be creative and personal in ways larger hotel brands sometimes can’t. We can evolve quickly, collaborate with local businesses and makers, create unique seasonal experiences, and stay very hands-on with hospitality. At the end of the day, we want guests to leave feeling like they discovered one of the Hill Country’s hidden gems — somewhere they’ll want to return to again and again.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is creating meaningful experiences and genuine human connection. That’s really what drew me to hospitality in the first place. I’ve always loved the idea that a place — whether it’s a hotel, a restaurant, or even just a gathering space — can become part of someone’s memories. A weekend getaway, a wedding, a long-overdue trip with friends, or even a quiet moment by the pool can end up meaning a lot more to people than we sometimes realize.

I also care deeply about creating environments that feel welcoming and authentic. I think people can tell when something is forced versus when it comes from a genuine place, and I try to bring that mindset into everything we do at Wimberley Inn + Bar. I want guests to feel comfortable, relaxed, and cared for without things feeling overly scripted or corporate.

Beyond hospitality itself, I value creativity, storytelling, and a strong sense of place. I love branding, design, music, food and beverage, and the little details that shape how a space feels emotionally. Wimberley is such a unique and special town, and I’m proud to be part of a property that reflects that character while helping create experiences people remember long after they leave.
