Hidden Gems: Meet Bjarne Haug of myTrailer, inc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bjarne Haug

Hi Bjarne, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
So, here’s a bit about my journey: I was the owner of a company called IMOTO, which we successfully exited in December 2021. As a car enthusiast, I also owned a large enclosed car trailer. Shortly after selling my company, I passed the storage facility where I kept the trailer and thought, Why am I paying $130 a month just to park it?

That realization sparked my curiosity, and I began researching the trailer rental business. It quickly became clear that there was a genuine need for a trailer rental marketplace. That’s when the idea for myTrailer was born.

Soon after, I reached out to the developer we worked with at my previous company, knowing he was more than capable of bringing this vision to life. After a few productive meetings, we decided to move forward, and myTrailer officially launched in April 2024. Since then, we’ve facilitated numerous rentals and continue to grow, connecting trailer owners with renters in need.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a peer-to-peer marketplace like myTrailer is definitely not smooth sailing, especially in the early stages. However, explaining the concept of this type of marketplace has become much easier, thanks to companies like Airbnb and Turo. As first movers in the peer-to-peer space, they’ve done a fantastic job of familiarizing people with the model, making it relatively straightforward for us to communicate how myTrailer works.

The challenging part, though, lies in convincing people to participate, particularly at the beginning. Trailer owners can be hesitant to list their assets, unsure about the safety and reliability of the platform. On the renter side, asking users to verify their identity—by uploading a photo and scanning their driver’s license—on a platform they’re unfamiliar with can be a significant hurdle. Trust, after all, isn’t built overnight.

Despite these challenges, we’ve been fortunate and strategic in attracting early adopters—those who saw the value and trusted us enough to join. These trailblazers helped set the foundation, and as more trailers were listed and rented successfully, word-of-mouth began to spread. Each successful transaction reinforced trust in the platform, and it’s now becoming progressively easier to onboard both trailer owners and renters.

Building a peer-to-peer marketplace is a process of overcoming doubts, creating trust, and delivering value. It requires persistence, adaptability, and a commitment to ensuring both parties feel safe and confident in using the platform. While the journey has its bumps, seeing the community grow and thrive is incredibly rewarding. We’re proud of how far we’ve come and are excited for what lies ahead.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
