Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Boehr.
Hi Brittany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always loved being active. I’m also an optimist with a strong bent toward encouragement by default. Funny enough, I never thought to pursue a career in fitness coaching until I felt led to leave my desk job, take a year to rest and reset after a season of burnout, and allow myself to dream into new possibilities. I realized I REALLY enjoy fitness and helping people live their healthiest most satisfying lives. Next thing I knew, I was certifying to become a personal trainer, launching my own business, and using the beautiful city of Austin as my gym! This summer marks 5 years in business for Brittany Boehr (BB) Mobile Personal Training, and I couldn’t be more grateful to live each week enjoying all the life-giving activities I get to call “work”.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth road, no way! Half the battle was learning simply to THINK of myself as an entrepreneur, let alone have the confidence to train clients to begin owning their health and grow stronger. Until that point, possibly the most entrepreneurial thing I’d done was host a garage sale! I had to work through much insecurity and fear of letting others down. I also had to wrestle with my sense of financial security – no paycheck unless I find clients! Yet here I am 5 years later, still going strong. My honest secret to success? Jesus Christ. He’s been my savior, my best friend, my counselor, and my leader since age 11. Upon launching my training business, I also needed him to be my business coach. He actually suggested the idea that I consider personal training. He gave me the courage to start the business. And when I wondered how I’d make it financially, he told me he’d supply everything I needed. And now I’m celebrating years of success, dozens of lives changed, personally stronger and more confident and loving it. Thank you God!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I do mobile personal training, meaning I train my clients almost anywhere – in their homes, out of my garage, in local parks, or through live online sessions. I bring all the equipment necessary for our workouts with me – everything from dumbbells to resistance bands to medicine balls to TRX. (I even have a bowling ball!) All my clients need to do is show up! Well…fueled and hydrated, of course. 🙂 Most sessions last one full hour, with warm up and cool down included, and are intentionally curated to support each client’s goals and needs.
I believe in sustainable transformation, helping my clients make small changes they can maintain consistently, building health and strength to last a lifetime. To do this, I train the WHOLE person – body and soul – to grow not only in physical strength but more importantly in the strength of mind needed to sustain it.
Clients commit to 1-month or 3-month programs with a minimum of 2 workouts per week. Beyond meeting for weekly workouts, we have regular check-in conversations. These create a space where we can both celebrate their wins (celebrating is HUGE) and strategize on how to overcome any obstacles they presently face. I value teaching my clients both proper physical alignment with good form and technique, as well as proper mental alignment, training them to think about their lives and bodies in ways that are true, good and beautiful. To help them keep their eyes on their goals, I created a personalized workbook that each one receives, empowering them to review their priorities daily and transform their lives one choice at a time.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
You don’t have to have all the answers to get started, nor are you responsible for the outcomes. It can be easy to feel like you have to see the full picture before moving forward, but rarely (if ever) do we get that kind of clarity. The best thing you can do is take the next clear step.
Wisdom is often found at the intersection of good advisors and your own gut. I’ve found that I need to lean into both in order to grow well in business. Sometimes the best way forward is a bit unconventional; sometimes is the obvious well-trodden path. One isn’t necessarily better than the other.
To walk in wisdom, I find I often need to slow down and give myself a chance to sit with the situation. Hurry never helps. Here in the West we’re almost always in a hurry for something, but living that way robs us of the pleasure of presence of mind and self-control in our decision-making. I remind myself that taking an extra 3 minutes to consider something thoughtfully and – for me as a follower of Jesus, pray about it – will never come back to bite me.
Believe in yourself! We’re all growing, we’re all in process. But just because you’re still learning, doesn’t mean you don’t have something to offer someone today just as you are! Your skills and knowledge didn’t just begin when you certified or graduated with your degree; you’ve been building them for years through your life experiences. You likely have much more to offer than you think.
Let growth take time. Another tough element of our western culture is the expectation of quick fixes and fast growth. But lasting quality growth takes – and MUST take – time. Much of what we need to sustain successful growth is built in the process we go through to get to that point. If we rush ahead and short-cut our way to the goal, we can end up wrecked by the very success we dreamed of achieving.
