Hidden Gems: Meet Garth Tubbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garth Tubbs.

Hi Garth, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up in the Dominican Republic, there’s really only two social classes– the lower class and the upper class. Luckily I was fortunate enough to be placed in the latter, experiencing what I considered to be a very fortunate lifestyle because of my dad’s work in the government. Growing up around very wealthy families showed me that there was a different type of lifestyle that some are fortunate to live and I was going to do everything in my power to build a lifestyle like those I experienced. So, my plan was to follow in his footsteps by studying criminal justice in college and eventually trying a few internships working for the government… long story short, that wasn’t going to cut it. I realized there was something more out there than the job I was in, so I asked myself “what does my current lifestyle already look like?” and decided it was time to make my job about those interests. I actively enjoyed the night life scene and could never have too many people around to socialize with. .

So, I made the decision to take the leap from pursuing what I thought was the best route because of what my father did and instead went a route that carried my interests and attention… the nightlife industry. So there I was working as a bouncer at a club in San Marcos. I started working my way up but knew I could do SO much more with the bars and clubs I was working at as a bartender. I realized that I would never be able to execute the ideas I had at the bar I was currently at so I left and started promoting for another Bar down the street, which was not bringing in any revenue after 9 pm. I saw an opportunity there to build a team of promoters and start adding value back to this bar. This project was essentially my first time planning out a nightclub, and I was taking home 50% of everything we made during those 9 pm-close periods I was planning– which was a lot. In fact, we started making so much money that the owner asked to pull back on my cut, which is around the time I realized my value, left that bar, and met my now partner, Jonah Rader. We wanted to actually buy a bar and run it ourselves, but there were challenges in acquiring one.

Once we finally got the financing, we became owners of the Vault and Sake in San Marcos, J&G Ventures was the company we formed for future endeavors. From there we caught the eye of our now event production Hello! Entertainment where we started throwing large scale food festivals and concerts. The rest is history and the teams continue to build despite global pandemics. What I’ve learned, and the reason I believe I’ve found so much success in my businesses, is that I thrive when I build businesses around my lifestyle, rather than building my lifestyle around my businesses. I am the consumer, I am my own target demographic, and I know exactly what will work, what I love, and what’s the next big thing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road– never! But the moment you realize that un-smoothness of the road is a part of the equation it’s at that very moment that the obsession fosters a home. The obsession grows so heavy that others begin to feel it. Those who are close tend to criticize the vision because it doesn’t make sense. Those who are your rivals or competitors in the same market fuel the heat of passion and drive so much that they will do anything to stop it. The unfathomable life events that cannot be controlled like COVID-19 are a new type of hurdle that no one could have been prepared for. Being financially aware isn’t something you are born with, it’s something you learn from profit and from loss. It’s something you learn from risking and gaining, but it’s never something you are gifted without personal experience. The only way to truly succeed is through a path of struggles; those struggles come with lessons, and those lessons offer an opportunity to learn. One who is always in a state of “student” and has the never ending will power to always learn will never be phased by struggles. IT’S ALL A MINDSET.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Garth Tubbs Consulting | J&G Ventures?
I am a multiple-business entrepreneur and help individuals build businesses around their lifestyles. First we identify what these individuals are extremely passionate about. Between my team and I, we have helped others from opening up several bars across Texas to throwing some of the biggest food festivals in Texas. We have taken a deeper dive into the music industry by hosting drive-in concerts for thousands of people in the middle of a pandemic. No business is too big or too small. Rather, it’s the passion that drives those people that we love to get behind. We are a diverse group of visionaries who plan to disrupt the entertainment and hospitality industries with a new era of events and venues. I personally help individual clients with personal projects and consulting services, but also speak to groups who are looking to find a way to monetize all of their passions. If you would like to book a consultation call with me and/or my team, or book me to speak at your event, you can reach me @GarthTubbs or at Garthtubbs@garthtubbs.com.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
The difference between where you are currently at and where you want to go is simple – the knowledge and the step-by-step process to get there. Rather than spending hours, days, weeks, or even months trying to figure it out it is as simple as just asking someone who has done it before and been successful. Whether it’s asking a person or asking the internet, you’ll find answers. Talk to someone who is doing it, ask them how to do it– or even better, do it with them when you can. Knowledge is everything! If you wanna start your journey, I want to help people in any way I can. Email me at garthtubbs@garthtubbs.com or Dm me @GarthTubbs on Instagram and let’s get started. If there’s any way we can collaborate our ideas to create something bigger, please reach out.
